That would be the much awaited iPod phone we've discussed here, Microsoft made an announcement in regards to a Zune based phone coming shortly as well.

Now this could be interesting, apple competing with carriers on phones by selling them unlocked & unbranded.

I wonder if they will sell them like regular electronics on the shelves or by their web site only?

Actually I'm sure it'll be offered in Carrier stores, we'll see though.

I doubt that's real, the patent application rough sketch had buttons and a d-pad, but we shall see.

On another note, Cisco has rights to the name iPhone, they are actually just now beginning to use it on their wifi based IP Phones. There's gonna be a battle between the two soon, we'll see what happens.

Does Apple have to own the rights to i-everything? I'd like to think that Apple won't even use the name iPhone and will come up with something completely new... like "zune" but without the suck.

wow....that's a good one! If Cisco got it first, then Apple has to look elsewhere.

iPhone?
Close but a fake. Text message entry screen for one does not use QWERTY which would be very non-standard.

Also, how are you going to "dial" if it's a touch screen of this size? Many people have fingers that are a bit too big not to cause many mis-keyed numbers I would think.

I read somewhere that Apple has it in Europe and that there are still multiple people vying for the trademark.

I would have thought Apple would want to use the same name for the handset all over the world.

I personally think they're not going to bother with iPhone. I'd expect them to want to use something closer to the iPod name. Possibly of note is that they dropped the iBook and replaced with the Macbook and the PowerBook was replaced with Macbook Pro.
