Here in Germany, the original word was Mobiltelefon but the word "Handy" has been in use a lot more for the past 10 years or so.

That's weird. I know next to nothing about the German language, and I know many Germans speak English well. It sounds though, like the name "AT&T Mobile" would be more understandable to a non-English-speaking German than "AT&T Wireless". All academic, I guess, because AT&T's marketing geniuses have made up their minds.

Actually, I'm a Cingular, former CellularONE customer (I guess that's red?) eventually to be ATT...

The only reason why AT&T will probably revive the "AT&T Wireless" name is because the term "Wireless" carries much more weight for us as Americans. Most US carriers use the term "wireless".

Understood. Others above were making the point that AT&T should make a break from the past and use "AT&T Mobile" when they drop the Cingular brand. I was just saying that this would be better internationally as well (at least in Europe, South/Central America and Australia) .

That is definitely true , T-Mobile makes that point every time they advertise here in Germany.

That wouldn't be a bad name for them to use, especially since you hear more & more "Wireless" articles & they have nothing to do with Cell phones & more on WiFi & other wireless setup's.
It may acutually prevent confusion for some customers, especially since AT&T is now offering "Wireless, Satellite" broadband service for people in rural area's of the country.

Of course, the first use of the term "wireless" was for the invention of wireless, as opposed to wired, telegraphy (invented by Marconi in Italy and commercialized by him in the UK), which later was developed into radio. In my grandparent's generation, "wireless" meant radio.

...and if you're a fan of Battlestar Galactica (the new one, anyway), it still does. =)
