Sprint Nextel to offer iDEN and Wi-Fi dual-mode handsets

They're being a little skinny on the details at this time, but Sprint Nextel has gone on the record announcing plans on rolling out an iDEN/CDMA phone in October, with a Wi-Fi/CDMA handset shipping sometime in the second half of this year.

The iDEN/CDMA handset, whichever it may be, will be designed to please all the push-to-talk customers out there. The iDEN half of the phone, so they say, will be used for PTT only, but that's not to say that the unit will come short on othere features, because the regular ol' CDMA and EV-DO networks should be able to pick up the slack.

In the Wi-Fi department, Sprint Nextel hopes to roll out a VoIP service that subscribers will be able use with their home wireless network, while at the same time being able to access your standard cellular calls as well through Sprint's CDMA.

The service provider is certainly trying to keep busy, testing Qualcomm's MediaFLO live TV functions this summer, and promising 4G service by 2009.

I think this could be very helpful to alot of Nextel people that have poor Cell Coverage but their PTT is usable, I know there are area's that PTT work but calls won't by me, yet Sprint user's have coverage and can make calls. It will be interesting to see how well they work.
