Nextel came out with 475,000 a week or so a go, and they just signed up their 10 millionth customer. Sprint PCS reported this afternoon. Here are some highlights: -Net operating revenues increased 19 percent in the quarter to $3.16 billion compared to $2.65 billion a year ago. -Gross customer additions were down significantly year over year, but increased modestly from the second quarter. Customer churn for the quarter was 3.8 percent, up from 2.6 percent in the same period a year ago. As a result, the PCS Group reported a loss of 78,000 subscribers for the quarter. -Average monthly revenue per user (ARPU) for the quarter was just over $63 compared to just under $62 in the third quarter a year ago. -EBITDA was $730 million, an 82 percent improvement from $402 million in the third quarter of 2001. -Operating income rose to $142 million from an operating loss of $116 million in the third quarter a year ago. -The cost to acquire a new customer was $395 in the third quarter, up from $285 a year ago. Cash cost per user for the quarter was just over $33 compared to just over $35 in the third quarter a year ago. -Capital expenditures of $650 million for the quarter reflected continued focus on service quality, capacity expansion, increased coverage for the company's nationwide wireless network and development of 3G capabilities. The loss in subscribers was anticpated. Churn is up as a result of the elimination of many ClearPay subscribers. ARPU still good.

Things can only get better for Sprint from this point with a new president, new plans, new phones, Vision improving, and changes in customer service. It will be interesting to see next quarters numbers compared to last quarter.

Even though Sprint lost about 78,000 customers themselves, their affiliates added about 74,000. So they still came out about even for the quarter.

AT&T Wireless added 201.000 in 3rd quarter, operating revenues $3.7 billion & US Cellular added 91.000! Likely to see T-Mobile in first position with 800.000 to 1.000.000 new customers and Verizon Wireless on second place with 600.000 to 800.000. |

A few US Cellular highlights (since someone mentioned it earlier, and I'm currently a customer)... **Customer units increased to 3,943,000, a 17% increase over the same period last year. **Net customer unit activations [from distribution channels in U.S. Cellular’s existing markets, excluding Chicago, totaled 91,000, compared to 85,000 activations generated during the same quarter of 2001. During the quarter, USM added 320,000 customers, which are not included in the 91,000 net additions noted above, from the acquisition of the Chicago Major Trading Area (“MTA”) personal communication service (“PCS”) license. Subsequent to the acquisition, the Chicago MTA lost 15,000 net customers during the quarter. **Monthly retail revenue per customer increased 8% year-over-year, to $38.95 in the third quarter of 2002 compared to $36.06 in the same period a year ago. So basically, excluding the Chicago market that they acquired, they gained 91,000 customers... then from the Primeco buyout, they got another 320,000 customers. Then that same market went and dropped 15,000 customers They also stated that conversion to CMDA 1xrtt from TDMA in the midwest is progressing ahead of schedule, which is a good thing... also says they're working on finishing up the acquisition of Primeco in Chicago... and that they'll make further announcements later this quarter. Postpay churn rate was quoted at 2.0% for the quarter, which is excellent, it seems, though higher than all previous quarters, which never topped 1.9% (not too big of a difference). Looking at the info on Primeco in Chicagoland... Primeco reportedly has 500+ towers in their service area, which seems like a heck of a lot. I kinda wonder, however, what (if anything) US Cellular will do to improve service there.. Anyone think they may actually bother to expand coverage up there to include more of Illinois? I know Primeco has PCS licenses in areas where USCC already has cellular licenses, so I wonder if they'll use that to their advantage to improve capacity at all? It does appear that Primeco had 20Mhz of spectrum in Chicago. |

Here is what I found On cingular: Cingular Reports Sharp Drop In Customers for 3Q Posted: 10/23/02 12:01:00 AM ATLANTA, Oct 22 (Reuters) - Telecommunications company BellSouth Corp. BLS.N said on Tuesday its Cingular Wireless joint venture posted slightly higher quarterly revenue, but it lost customers for the first time as it transferred fewer customers than expected from wholesale partner WorldCom Inc. The No. 2 U.S. wireless telephone company behind Verizon Wireless VZ.N VOD.L said its customer base for the third quarter fell by 107,000 customers from the second quarter. Analysts had already been expecting Cingular to post a subscriber loss, but the number was significantly higher than some expectations that ranged from 25,000 to 30,000. They blamed the customer loss on problems transferring subscribers from wholesale partner WorldCom, which decided to exit the wireless business in June. WorldCom WCOEQ.PK , which filed for bankruptcy protection in July, had been selling wireless service using other companies' networks. While WorldCom partners including Cingular signed a deal to move those customers to their own services, they are transferring fewer customers than anticipated, as many of WorldCom's customers appeared to be unprofitable to keep, analysts said. Cingular ended the quarter with 22.1 million wireless customers. Service revenue rose to $3.53 billion from $3.45 billion in the year-earlier quarter, helped by a customer base that was larger than a year ago, but average monthly revenue per user fell slightly. The company's operating cash flow, or earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA), fell to $1.1 billion from $1.23 billion. EBITDA, which excludes capital spending, taxes and financing charges, is a key measure for wireless companies with large capital expenditures. Cingular is a joint venture between BellSouth and SBC Communications Inc. SBC.N Shares of BellSouth, which owns 40 percent of Cingular, closed at $24.70 on the New York Stock Exchange on Monday. Shares of SBC closed at $25.75.

Generally, customers added via acquisition are not counted in "net new subscriber additions", so Verizon's number is about 800K (807 I think.) T-Mobile reportedly added 850K, and their total base is near 9 million. link Since the 4Q is the best for all the carriers except Nextel (who are more even since they cater to business), I am going out on a limb and saying T-M will exceed 1 million new adds in the 4Q, and top 10 million for the year, up 42% from 7 million at the end of 2001. Full T-M results due out next Thursday.

T-mobile posted great q3 results. That does not mean that there will not be a merger/acquisition between Cingular and T-Mobile. Cingular's parents have deep pockets and T-mobile will be out of the picture by the end of next year.

Much different environment last year to this year. 2003 will be an even more volatile year with everyone strapped for cash and trying to acquire new customers. Keep in mind most of the gross ads are not new wireless customers but migrations from one carrier to another.
