Do you mean some sort of free M2M minutes, similar to Verizon's "In" and Alltel's free M2M?

If that is the case, they are admiting that M2M is more important than direct connect and PTT.......

This is how the market is moving though.......

Isn't PTT free? You don't have to pay to "walkie-talkie" another Nextel customer, do you?

It's free in your local area, not nationally. We found this out the hard way after our Nextel rep told us it was free, but wasn't.

We had DC when my company used Nextel and I can tell you we greatly prefer the free M2M with Alltel. Conversations are not chopped like they are with DC.....

It depends on the plan. Some plans include PTT unlimited for free. It was about time Nextel did something about M2M.

Also...with Nextel's shift to a new (6:1) vocoder, Nextel can "afford" to offer M2M somewhat, since doing so won't be the bandwidth hit it currently is. (With the old vocoder, "interconnect" calls aka phone calls takes up twice the bandwidth that "dispatch" calls aka DC/PTT does; with the new one both take up the same amount of bandwidth.)

I wonder if the Unlimited MTM will cost extra on Nextel or be included in some rate plans. Cingular, Verizon, AT&T, and ALLTEL throw in Unlimited MTM on most plans now. If Nextel starts throwing it in for free then Sprint and T-Mobile really need to stop charging extra for theres.

I bet you it will sound even worse than it already is.

Probably...but from what I've heard the new one is pretty good.

FWIW, iDEN originally used 6:1 for both phone and PTT, but Nextel didn't like the sound quality for phone calls and pushed Motorola to come up with the current 3:1 for phone; Nextel further pushed Moto to come up with the new 6:1 to improve capacity. Southern LINC uses the OLD 6:1 (i.e., the one currently used by Nextel for PTT only) for both phone and PTT...talk about bad. (Of course, SoLINC puts much more emphasis on PTT than phone so it isn't as much of a problem for them.)

Can you hear me now?

What 'ja say? Huh? Speak up.

The previous statements assumes that Nextel actually had coverage in enough areas to need M2M......

After all, I think it is a nice step towards decency to give Nextel customers an option to talk to other Nextel subscribers for free without having to disturb their entire surroundings with LOUD private conversations and the obnoxious PTT beeps.
