Larry what are your thoughts if Sprint and Verizon were to merge.

I wouldn't like to see it happen. I like Sprint just the way they are. I'm not big on less competition.

If they do merge, I hope that they don't have Verizon's policies.

I hope that if they do merge we won't lose out grandfathered plans which are no longer offered such as my $10/mo for unlimited Vision & Picture Mail.

Talking about yapping 1900mhzcdma.....JK.. I'm sure your issues would come up on the drawing boards if this were to actually happen. If they want to build their customer base, it would be in their best interest not to upset off too many consumers by taking away all the features they love. But no matter what happens, not everyone will be pleased. There are always those who will leave and the majority who will stay.

I worked with Airtouch when they were initially taken over. There were so many rumors going around as to what was going to happen. Some said there were not going to be anymore mobile to mobile minutes and that they were going to implement three year service agreements; none which materialized. The biggest problem that we faced; and to some extent still do; was the complex billing issues. So many bills were messed up and that caused a lot of angry customers. Some due to miscommunication, but mostly the error of the thwarted billing systems. After everything blew over, after a better network materialized, employees laughed at how silly they were for worrying so much. A lot of customers left, but many more joined in. It would take a lot of work to manage such a company, and maybe the brains of Sprint's Marketing and Tech. teams could be a positive influence over sexier looking equipment and more technology-based applications.

It seems to me that we're more likely to see the big carriers continuing to buy up regional carriers, although I suppose I can see a merger between two of the big GSM carriers. And I could see some sort of partnership (e.g. nationwide data services and treating the other carrier as a "home" carrier on national plans), short of a full merger, between Sprint and VZW. But I don't see a full merger between the two passing regulatory muster--or really making much sense economically. |

Sprint should be stronger now with the Qwest deal being finalized next month. They pick up about 920K customers from that deal.

There have been so many of these articles by supposive experts that I don't believe half of what I read. The article seems to imply that Verizon will consider merging with Sprint because Cingular would have 4 million more customers if they merge with AT&T. Between the confusion created by the merger (Cingular & AT&T) and spinoff of unnecessary assets, I can see Verizon re-establishing the lead. In addition, it seems like Verizon has larger quarterly gains than both AT&T and Cingular combined. Needless to say the FCC would be skeptical about a Verizon/Sprint merger but most likely allow an AT&T/Cingular merger once overlapping assets & excess spectrum are sold. Verizon has been an agressive company spending billions to expand their network. As they told AT&T Consumer, we don't need you....we can do it on our own. And just for the record, I'm not a Verizon nor a CDMA fan. As a matter of fact I prefer GSM.

I'm thinking USCC will be the next regional to sell off or merge with another carrier... I'm sure they have property VZW would love to have. Or... perhaps maybe Alltel-USCC merger? Alltel would love to become a national player. larry- also historically VZW has not forced users to change their plans. When I was with Price communications we grandfathered in 7pm night and weekends and I had around 2000~ anytime minutes for $39.99. When the Bellsouth-Cingular merger happened unfortunately they made me change my plan so I cancelled. |

Well like someone else mentioned I doubt the FCC would even allow a Verizon/Sprint merger.

My question is would it even make sense to have a Verizon/Sprint merger? Verizon always seems to be one up on the competition as far as actual business practices go. They generally always have the most money to spend, the highest amount of net additions, and a low churn rate. If they were to merge with Sprint, does anyone honestly think that Verizon would want to implement any of Sprints business practices? I am not bashing Sprint in any way, just saying that if you look at the numbers, Verizon is way ahead. I personally would hate for the merger to happen, but I would like to see some of the more intuitive stuff Sprint offers come to Verizon.

Personally I'd like to see a US Cellular/ALLTEL merger or a Sprint PCS/ALLTEL merger. Nobody ever thinks of ALLTEL being a good fit for Sprint PCS but it would be I think. They have quite a few rural areas not served by Sprint PCS and it would give them a boost of around 7.5 millon subscribers. That would put them around subscriber numbers of Cingular Wireless, infact it would maybe even make them have more customers then Cingular. Sprint PCS could move from the number 4 national carrier to the number 2 national carrier if they merged with ALLTEL. |

I think Dan has a good point. A Sprint/Alltel merger would be much more likely to fly with the FCC than a Sprint/Verizon merger would. And yes it would be allowed as long as the overlapping markets were sold off (as one company is only allowed to own one network in any given area).

| Keep in mind that Verizon was not always the industry leader in adding new customers. Sprint held that title for a record 14 consecutive quarters (1998-2002) but nobody seems to remember that.
Maybe true, but it wasn't that hard for them to do with their "we will approve anyone and everyone philosophy" How bad was their churn rate back then?

Yeah... reminds me: Apparently T-mobile is offering the same customers who pull $1000 deposits at Verizon only like a $75 deposit at T-mobile. Hmmm? |

It was horrible. If anyone has the means I suggest one of my favorite articles, A November (10th??) 2002 issue of Wall Street Journal. It was titled "The worst phone service in America". They all but slammed Sprint...Called them "The Cell Phone company people love to hate" Their churn was atrocious. And I don't know about those Sprint figures. I have been selling Verizon and seen quarters that produce more new customers than the NEXT FOUR carriers!! As far as a Verizon/Sprint Merger....God I hope not. There are better ways for Verizon to gain just as many customers (if such a serious competitor ever arose). All they'd have to do is lighten up on the rates or drop the nights. Seems simple, but the customers I see still come in KNOWING that stuff is out there (ie: Sprints Nights at 7:00). Maybe it is not the same everywhere in the country, but it is here. In Columbus Ohio, Sprint is spoken of about as well as Osama Bin Laden. I certainly wouldn't want to inherit all of their baggage. I like my job because the only complaints I ever get are equipment issues...and then they are usually Motorolas. No one complains about the service. Ever. Period. If they drop calls in Columbus..It's ALWAYS an equipment issue. If Verizon ever seriously dropped their prices...all other companies would be in dire trouble. I'm sorry if that gets everyone upset, but thats just the simple numbers, and Verizon has more. Imagine if they were not the most expensive. At least it's nice to know that most of that money goes to network expansion and improvement. As I tell all my customers.."You get what you pay for". Now...If Verizon would just get the Bluetooth phones going I'd have no complaints...and a lot more sales. ALSO: That was just my OPINION...you do not have to agree with it. | |
