Car crash blamed on cell phone usage

A New Jersey, USA woman is in critical condition in hospital after her car crashed while she was apparently using a cellphone. The Monmouth Country woman was driving north on the parkway near Exit 63, the exit for Long Beach Island and Stafford and witnesses said they saw her using her phone while driving.

The sport utility vehicle, traveling in the left-hand lane, momentarily swerved off the highway, re-entered the road and then swerved into the right-hand lane, according to local police. At that point, the car hit another car and overturned.

The driver, Adele Loring, 47 has been charged with reckless driving, careless driving, careless driving while on a cellular phone, failure to wear a seat belt and driving with a suspended license.

She is currently in Atlantic City Medical Center undergoing medical treatment.

She basically asked for this. Why would someone be driving with a suspended license? Blame it on stupidity.

I passed at least 20 of these morons over the holiday on 101 just between San Luis Obispo and Ventura.

I am not sure if you made a typo or you meant it that way, but you just said that you don't wish harm or death on anyone but you also said "it's really too bad she didn't die"....hmmm

What I meant was that the left lane is for passing, not driving well below the speed of the rest of the traffic.

The typical SUV driver in the left lane, talking on a cell phone is oblivious to the rest of the planet. They never look at the long line in their rear view mirror as the putter along at 45 to 50 mph. Note, that I am talking about 101 and I-5 here.

It is, as I said, a problem. The typical SUV driver seems to believe that they took title to the left lane when they bought their vehicle.

I strongly encourage the CHP to ticket all these puttering fools for obstructing traffic. We do need the revenue to balance the budget.

Though larger vehicles do seem to make a larger mental impression than smaller ones, I would have to say that it is not just SUV drivers that hog the road. I have seem many many drivers of compact cars driving under the speed limit on in the number 2 lane of a 4-lane highway. Since during comute traffice the number 3 and 4 lanes are a wall-to-wall convoy of truckers, any blockage or slowing of the number 1 and 2 lanes is very annoying. At times, I see truckers actually passing up the idiots in the number 2 lane. Honking doesn't do any good, these morons think you are saying "hello."

(By the way, I am NOT an SUV owner.)

Kevin, you are correct.

There are idiots driving things other than SUVs.

Furthermore, this time of year is a poor time to judge the characteristics of traffic. During the shopping season before the holidays, there are enough 100 mile per year drivers on the road to really much up the traffic.

As per the issue at hand...why was this woman's license suspended anyway? Seems like more than just the cell phone contributed to her crash.

I meant both. Originally I was mad that Darwinism doesn't seem to be working in the world anymore but then I realized I'm not a bad person so I don't really want anyone to die... except mimes.

The idots that drive everything from big rigs to compacts (with or without being on cellphones) are the reason I bought an F350...Already been thankful once when I was rear-ended that my truck was bigger than what hit me.

I agree with you on this Bugwart. The other bad factor is when people try to change lanes or they won't let you into their lane while talking on their cell phones. I think the left lane factor on 101 is when some people love to talk and drive at the same time when they are in the carpool lane. I remember having some close shaves over the summer since people would tailgate me simply because I was already over 75 in a 65 mph zone. Driving is becoming slightly more dangerous as more people talk while they drive.

I'm not opposed to people talking on their phone but there are other times when they can do it and if it has to be in a car, then they should use a car kit for their own safety.
