Rural wireless service providers are asking the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to exempt them from immediately complying with wireless number portability (WNP) rules. These operators, which do not fall under the top 100 metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs), are asking for the exemption based on a subset of their mostly rural customer base, which will need to comply with portability rules as of May 24, 2004. The Organization for the Promotion and Advancement of Small Telecommunications Companies (Opastco) filed a petition along with a couple others that states that technical questions regarding the FCC's Nov. 7 order spelling out WNP obligations did not leave ample time to resolve issues specific to their networks. (Source: Wall Street Journal) I wonder if this will affect Edge Wireless (AT&T Network providing 1900 TDMA and GSM in CA, OR, ID and WY) here in my neck of the woods as they don't have service in any of the top 100 markets, or other small carriers in the west like Golden State Cellular, Inland Cellular, Union Cellular and others. Here's the rural operators I know of in the Pacific States, Nevada and in Idaho: Edge Wireless CC Communications Golden State Cellular Cal North Wireless Cellular One Ramcell of Oregon Inland Cellular Mountain Cellular |

Well, if the Lake and Mendocino counties are not in the top 100 markets then of course it will affect Edge Wireless.

I realize that, I was wondering if Edge is one of the carriers in this quest to delay, guess I should have worded my question better.
