Verizon Wireless Sues
Accuses 51 individuals of sending unsolicited text messages

Verizon Wireless has filed, the first US lawsuit addressing wireless spam, against 51 individuals that exploited its wireless network to send millions of unsolicited text messages. Verizon has accused Jacob Brown, an employee of a Pawtucket outfit called The Phoenix Company, along with 50 unidentified "John Does" of violating a number of state and federal statutes, including the 2003 CAN-SPAM Act and the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. Verizon claims that the defendants transmitted approximately 4.5 million unsolicited electronic text messages, one million of which were actually delivered to subscribers' handsets, the remainder of which were filtered. The messages were sent in unpredictable bursts, beginning around early March and have continued since then, with nearly 800,000 text messages being sent in just one day in late May.

While I was with Nextel, they sent me numerous text messages about upgrades, etc. It seemed like spam to me.

None from Alltel since I've been with them.

With ATTWS, it could be worse. They could have been about American Idol. =)

I guess I've been lucky. I have NEVER gotten any SPAM MSGs on either of my phones. Maybe VZW likes me

As far as them suing the Spammers, I think their slogan says it all.

On a side note, my brother who works for Verizon Wireless at one of the main business parks had got a couple of SPAM msgs to his phone from the same person or company. He was able to track exactly where that msg came from and called the company as it turned out to be and told them to "f***ing quit sending this crap to me" were his exact words. They I guess tried to deny it and pretend that they didn't know anything. He told them that he is able to tract EVERYTHING and told them not to try and play stupid. They eventually hung up on him.

I thought it was kind of funny.

Thumbs up Re: Verizon Wireless Sues

I forgot Verizon knew it was Spam so I could not read the message and it was Deleted my there system.
So Verizon seem to have a system to figure out if one person sends out tons of spam text messages.

well, i only got one spam message about 2 years ago, from none other than yahoo!!!!!!

anyway, i get a lot of weird calls on my phone. first, the phone rings in a weird manner, with a ringtone i never know my phone had. i remember, the first time i got one of these calls i said to myself "what the , my phone is broken!!!"... i looked on the screen and it said "Data Call". there is no way to answer it, only to "make a connection". that is the only option i get. i have received these calls a lot.

when i call the number back, the people who answer have no idea what i am talking about, they said they have not called me. this has happened many times, and not one person has said they called, which tells me no one is lieing. one time, i called this number back, an a woman answered me really angry claiming i was calling her over and over again, and i had not. she was just going on and on, and i got fed up and told her to stick the phone... well, you get the idea...

what could these calls be??

Way to go VZ! But unfortunately spammers will find other ways, such as from international accounts and websites that send messages to phones. I guess their response to Verizon is: "We never stop spamming for you!"

Verizon Wireless putting adware on their CDs is not much better than getting a spam text message

That entire thing was blown way out of proportion IMO... it was only used by the distribution customer to see the effectiveness of the program.

Jayc, still...honestly in my mind it was NOT appreciated . Adware is BAD 99.9% of the time. The othewr .01% of the time its for something I REALY need.
