Default Sprint PCS readies for PTT launch with FCC approval of Sanyo phone

from RCR Wireless News
by Mike Dano

Sprint PCS is apparently getting closer to launching its planned push-to-talk service, as a newly approved mobile phone from Sprint handset provider Sanyo features what appears to be a dedicated PTT button.

The Federal Communications Commission recently approved the new Sanyo phone, the SCP-5500. The FCC must certify all radio communications equipment.

According to Sanyo’s FCC filing, the phone features an integrated digital camera for both picture and video capture as well as text messaging and Java support. The phone also features a dedicated Ready Link button. Ready Link is the name Sprint has given to its PTT offering, as previously reported by RCR Wireless News.

Sprint officials were not immediately available for comment. A Sanyo spokesman declined to comment. The news follows widespread rumors that Sprint would launch its PTT service with a pair of Sanyo handsets.

Sprint has previously said it plans to launch a push-to-talk service in the fourth quarter of this year. The carrier’s move follows rival Verizon Wireless’ PTT offering, which is competing with longtime push-to-talk provider Nextel Communications Inc.

It's only a matter of time before PTT is available with all 6 national carriers. I don't think it matters one way or the other if you can stand to wait a few years.

sprint doesn't want a verizon-like PTT launch. Test it to see if it will work, then do it all over again.

You're right, they want to make sure the latency issue is taken care of as well as possible before they launch ReadyLink. Sprint learned from launching Vision too soon. It won't be much longer, though.

100,000 new PTT customers in 3Q is not bad... considering VZW didn't intend for this to be it's primary user base.

True. I'm thinking that in two years most if not all phones will have WAP, PTT, cameras, picture messaging, etc. They're just going to keep getting smaller and packed with features until it's D!ck Tracy time with a watch-sized phone/camera/web browser/walkie-talkie. Those are going to be some ugly watches.

So, what happened to Nextel? Aren't they going to start crying about this?

They probably have some of them already. There is no reason for Nextel to start this crap. Donahue will be ousted.

There was no reason for Nextel to start crying about Cingular's license purchases from Nextwave but they did. There was no reason for Nextel to sue Verizon for the use of the term PTT, which for some odd reason Nextel seems to believe is their brand name. So given Nextel's empty-headed and grumpy-grandma behavior, I wouldn't be surprised if they continue wasting their time and the time of others.

People still dont get that Verizon and Sprint (CDMA) PTT uses (VoIP) Voice-Over-IP as opposed to Nextel's Radio service.
There will ALWAYS be a latency issue when it comes to voice over internet protocol. Think of it as this.
Your phone is a web page.
The phone youre trying to communicate with is also a web page.
in order for one web page to connect to the other, several connections must be made such as a Domain Name Resolve to allow your host DNS connection. then the port has to be opened for the data(in this case your voice) to go through, once the connection is made and the port is open you can see the contents of the web page on the other side. in PTT's case, thats your voice.
ALSO you cant forget the compression that the voice has to go through to smoothly get to the pther end where it will be decompressed and your voice be heard on that nice loud speaker phone.
So remember kids , Latency will always be there as long as your voice is being carried over the Internet.

We use VoIP for video communications everyday and our latency is less than 0.5 sec. I've had two-way IP phone conversations using the Internet from the US to other countries and the latency was no more than 1.2 sec. The latency inherent in PTT over cellular (PoC) is not because it is carried over the Internet (in fact, PoC will use the carrier's own network instead of the Internet). The latency occurs partly because of protocol overhead and mostly because of buffering. Once data connections over wireless networks become faster, buffering will be significantly reduced and will match, if not surpass, Nextel's own PTT. Just give it time.

Nextel also compresses your voice and has its own overhead and delay. However, since the system was designed for it and it is a much more mature system, their latency is much less. By the way, Nextel doesn't want you to know this, but when you use Nextel PTT across markets (which was impossible before they launched national PTT) the latency is much higher than when talking within the same market. So Nextel has some issues too.
