They already have them with Edge Wireless, their affiliate in the West, operating a TDMA and GSM/GPRS (they are just turning this on, so not all Edge Wireless locations have GSM/GPRS yet) network in N.CA, S.OR, SE.ID and W.WY, see my post in the Western Forum about it This gives AT&T people a huge boost in coverage area in the rual and smaller metro areas in these four states. Oh, and Edge Wireless does not charge you to use their network if you are from AT&T, sorry T-Mobile and Cingular people, no roaming agreement with them yet, SOS 911 only for those companies on Edge.

oooh! I guess I have to sign up with AT&T so that when I need to call 911 in an EDGE Wireless area my phone works. Guess what? Roaming agreements are not necessary to make a 911 call. So any GSM customer from any carrier should be able to use EDGE towers in the event of an emergency.

I know that, that's why I said SOS 911 calls only on Edge Wireless with T-Mobile and Cingular GSM customers (When I said Cingular, I meant GSM customers, I have no idea what kind of agreement Edge Wireless has with Cingular TDMA, if any).

Well, ILUV, there are always exceptions to the rule.

Yep, and if you knew the mountainous terrain of this area, and how difficult and expensive it is to cover, you'd realize like I do how much of a miracle it is Without Edge Wireless, I'd still be stuck with Verizon "NO WE CAN'T HEAR YOU NOW YOU DUFUS!!" Wireless lol I think that guy is working for the M.A.N

What I meant was that it seems that in your area GSM is great as you claim which is not the case in most of the US. Exception to the rule....

True, but when you look at all the small cities and rural areas Edge covers, and with them overlaying all of the network with GSM/GPRS, there will probably be a lot less exceptions and more rules by the end of the year
