| AT&T Wireless to cut 1,000 jobs Company will let about 3 percent of its work force go as it continues to trim costs. July 2, 2003: 7:04 AM EDT NEW YORK (Reuters) - AT&T Wireless Services Inc. will shed around three percent of its work force this year, or about 1,000 jobs, as part of an ongoing cost-cutting program, according to a published report Wednesday. AT&T Wireless, the second largest U.S. wireless operator in terms of sales, cut about 2,000 jobs last year, according to the Wall Street Journal. The latest round of reductions, which have not been publicly announced, will happen in waves, the paper reported. About 200 workers had their last day at AT&T Wireless Monday, and another 300 are set to be laid off this month, a person familiar with the situation told the Journal. A company spokesman told the newspaper that the cuts resulted in part from moves to consolidate AT&T Wireless operations at its Redmond, Wash. headquarters, and in New York and New Jersey. The spokesman said AT&T Wireless did not have definite information yet on how many people would be affected, and what the reductions would cost. |

Well, Sprint sent a lot of their customer service jobs to India, that's as bad, if not worse than laying people off here.

Lol I guess. To be fair to Sprint, Dell has also outsourced a lot of customer care to India. I have called them a few times and could hardly understand the rep, no offense to Indian people.

You could be right Matt, I just knew they outsourced a lot of care to India, wasn't sure on which type. I see the unemployment rate in the US hit it's highest rate in 9 years, any bright news for our economy? Recall of Bush, Cheney? Sorry, shameless political stab

Not to change the subject, but it seems like a lot of American companies are outsourcing functions to India. These are companies run by idiotic CEOs and overpaid executives who think you will still buy their products or services even though you have no job. I guess they know something I don't.

Sad, isn't it? At a time when our economy is the worst it's been in a long time, and umemployment at record levels, these companies, in the desire to make one more almighty dollar ship good jobs to overseas lands by the boatload. Now, I am not a isolationist at all, and I believe in fair trade, but this is a sickening trend. I am glad those people in India and the Phillipines have nice jobs now, but I wonder if they or the corporations know or stop to think about the family in California or the single mother in Ohio that lost their jobs due to having them exported. By the way Bobo, LOL ETC.!!!!! I loved it |

I don't know that a customer service job can be called "good" as they usually pay less than a job at a fast food joint. The fact I can't get hired for that kind of job anyway since I am "overqualified" makes me more upset. And though this has nothing to do with wireless, the lack of jobs is not in the "low skilled" sector such as customer service and fast food, as McDonald's has been able to lower their starting pay due to overabundance of applications. The problems are that medium and high skilled jobs are gone. I wonder if the Japanese got mad when Toyota announced they were going to build an assembly plant in San Antonio?

You could also argue if Sprint didn't send those jobs to India they would lose more money here and in turn possibly go out of business and then a lot more people would be out of work. Not saying that I believe it, but.... I don't even know if Sprint laid-off workers here and shifted to India or if the jobs were just created there.
