Wireless Companies Increase Systems for Democratic Convention

Many wireless companies are increasing their systems to get ready for the Democratic National Convention in Boston this month. Verizon is spending almost $2 million to add about 20% more calling capacity. The company plans to add a new transmitter to the arena ceiling and a cell on wheels (COW). Cingular Wireless will use mainly software upgrades to add two to four times more permanent calling channels. AT&T Wireless doubled the capacity of cell sites near the area and increased coverage downtown by 30%; the company will also have senior management working round-the-clock shifts. Nextel Communications Inc. has been named the "official" wireless sponsor for the Democratic and Republican conventions. The company plans to provide DirectConnect handsets, BlackBerry devices, and wireless data cards for laptop computers. Nextel has not disclosed how much it is donating to the organizations.(Source: Boston Globe)

If Nextel is the offical provider for the convention they better have donate/invest at least $2 million for wireless or more.

...or better yet, they should decrease coverage in that area so that if something happens Public Safety systems will work!
