NORTH FORUM AND BOBLITO *sp* PLEASE DUMB THIS DOWN FOR ME AND EXPLAINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN YOU KNOW THE DEAL http://www.attws.com/press/releases/...WFP3R1M5W0CFFA AT&T Wireless Signs Agreements to Expand Next Generation Roaming Coverage in U.S. For Immediate Release: Monday, March 17, 2003 Redmond, Wash.- On the heels of announcing a major roaming accord with Cingular Wireless earlier today, AT&T Wireless said that, in the past year, it has signed domestic GSM/GPRS (Global System for Mobile Communications/General Packet Radio Service) roaming agreements with another 22 wireless carriers. The agreements further expand AT&T Wireless' next generation roaming capabilities in mostly rural areas of 30 states. Roaming service is targeted to be available in most of these areas by the end of 2003. AT&T Wireless' next generation network currently covers a U.S. population of about 188 million people and is on track to reach 214 million people by year-end, not including the areas covered by the new roaming agreements. "We've signed a number of important GSM roaming agreements as a cost-efficient way to supplement our own new nationwide next generation network and further enhance the coverage we offer customers," said Robert Stokes, Senior Vice President - Business Development, AT&T Wireless. "By carefully targeting our GSM roaming agreements to complement our own network, we can offer customers all the benefits of the GSM world technology standard whether at home, work, or play." "Customers of our next generation services already get quality, widespread coverage both at home and abroad. In addition, our U.S. roaming agreements allow us to expand service to rural and other targeted areas not included in our network footprint." AT&T Wireless also noted that its customers may use their next generation phones in nearly 100 countries. The company has now signed reciprocal roaming agreements with 140 wireless carriers, covering a population of more than 3.5 billion people. WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE go aTt |

Basically, AT&T has contacted other companies that either have GSM networks (like NPI wireless) or are building GSM networks (like USCC) and made an agreement that allows customers of AT&T wireless to use their networks when AT&T coverage isn't available. bobo would jump on me if I didn't say that this doesn't necessarally mean free roaming on other networks. Customers may have to pay for the roaming like Sprint customers do when they go off network, but it is unlikely that they would publicise it so highly if they weren't going to make it free for their customers. It basically means that AT&T will be using other companies to supplement their GSM coverage (especially in rural areas) and either AT&T will foot the bill or they will pass it on to customers. The way their TDMA roaming worked, I would have to say that it is going to be free for customers. EDIT: I am not saying that NPI or USCC are in the 22 companies that they contacted. This announcements just says that they have made roaming agreements with 22 US companies for GSM service. |

Just for general info: as of November 2002, T-Mobile had domestic roaming agreements with Airadigm Communications, Cingular Wireless, Conestoga Wireless Company, Iowa Wireless Services LP and NPI Wireless. Cingular had agreements with Airadigm Communications, Conestoga Wireless Company, Iowa Wireless Services LP, NPI Wireless, T-Mobile USA, Inc. and Third Kentucky Cellular Corporation (Wireless 2000 Telephone Co.). In November, AT&T had no GSM roaming agreements. |

Actually, USCC is overlaying CDMA onto their existing TDMA networks, I have never heard of any plans by them to go GSM. Also, Edge Wireless, the AT&T affiliate operating here in the west(Northern California, Southern Oregon, Eastern Idaho and Western Wyoming)is in the process of overlaying GSM onto their existing 1900 TDMA system. I don't know about their other areas, but I do know from talking to their techs that Edge will open up their GSM network here in Northern California to AT&T peeps very soon, and will begin selling it officially by the end of this summer, bringing GSM to Ukiah,Willits, Fort Bragg, Eureka, Susanville, Alturas, Yreka and Weed, areas currently without any GSM. www.uscc.com www.edgewireless.com |

USCC stated back when they announced their CDMA conversion they would consider adding GSM for roamers only in select markets. I don't see USCC adding GSM in OR/WA or the Northeast, where RCC (which has much better relations with both AT&T and Cingular than USCC does -- Cingular apparently still hates USCC because of the '96 Olympics/Ocoee mess) is very likely to go GSM, but USCC certainly could in places where the other 800 MHz carrier is CDMA, such as in NorCal [VZW and Cal-North are both CDMA], the Carolinas [ALLTEL is CDMA], etc. And if Eloqui in middle TN goes GSM, USCC will almost definitely turn up GSM in Knoxville, too... (Cingular doesn't need USCC in Knoxville anymore thanks to GAIT and AT&T having bought Telecorp ) -SC

With Edge Wireless going GSM here this year, I can't see USCC putting up GSM here.

Plus, it would be a bit hard for them to run CDMA, TDMA, AMPS and GSM all at the same time.
