Cell Phones to Make WiFi Calls ARTICLE DATE: 02.08.06 By Sascha Segan Chipmaker Royal Philips Electronics confirmed that a U.S. cellular carrier will launch voice-over-Wi-Fi technology this year, based on Philips' new Nexperia 6120 chipset. Callers should be able to make calls on their home Wi-Fi networks for "a couple of bucks a month, flat rate," according to Philips' Carsten Schimanke. The Nexperia 6120 chipset is in the Samsung SGH-T709 phone, Schimanke said. We saw the T709 at CES, and it's a slender, attractive slider phone. The solution uses Philips' BGW211 802.11g WLAN chipset, according to the company. The chipset adds about $12 to the price of a phone, Schimanke said. Nexperia's UMA technology lets calls "tunnel" from Wi-Fi access points, through the Internet, and onto a cellular network. From there, the calls will be tracked by the carriers billing system and forwarded along to their destination. Philips would not identify their carrier partner. But the Samsung T709 we saw at CES showed options to connect to T-Mobile Hotspots as well as home networks. T-Mobile is leveraging its Wi-Fi network as a competitor to other carriers' 3G high-speed cellular systems. With UMA, every home with a wireless LAN and every Starbucks becomes a place with full bars of signal, and that's compelling. When we asked T-Mobile about UMA, spokesman David Henderson released this statement: "T-Mobile absolutely believes the future will be about leveraging diverse forms of radio access technology for our customers and UMA, we think, is one of the technologies that will help us continue to deliver on that promise." Philips also announced a DTM (dual transfer mode) solution which will enable simultaneous voice and data transfer over EDGE networks, approximating the capabilities of the new 3G UMTS/HSDPA systems. This would enable things like video calling and simultaneous phone calling/Web browsing which are selling points for European 3G networks, and haven't even been introduced here in the US yet. The goal is to offer 3G services even when you're outside 3G coverage areas, Schimanke said. "Though UMTS coverage is growing among major metro areas and highways, there will always be some white spots which will be covered by GSM/EDGE," he said. "This allows operators to have the same experience in UMTS or EDGE coverage." Cingular would be the obvious customer for this technology in the USA, but they haven't released any handsets for their newly-relaunched UMTS/HSDPA network yet. Seeing that we're behind in the UMTS field, Philips is building their DTM solution for the UK first, with a US version to follow, Schimanke said. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1923274,00.asp

| VOIP Calls are Tax Free by Congress. So T-Mobile can Offer Unlimited Calling at Home. This is the End of Indoor Dead Zone Like your Home/Apartment and where there's T-Mobile WIFI like Borders, Starbucks, Airports... For cellular phone users, the building’s outside walls seriously degrade the signal from the nearest cellular base station. VZW Fans read this Admin Edit: I had to remove the pictures. Why would I weep? I get a perfectly good signal in my house, and I certainly get a better signal in most areas around town than those with T-Mobile. That's good news for T-Mobile users, but it's not the end of the world for other carriers.

VOIP Calling will Not be deducted on Your Minutes. There are still many residential areas/apartments which has no Indoor Reception. And since there are Now more broadband than Dial Up this is better than 3G.

Please read this very carefully, jones. I do not need tax free unlimited calling. I get a good signal in my house and don't use all the minutes I have now. When I leave my house, almost everywhere I go has a good signal. The few places that don't are not places where there are wifi hotspots. So this feature means absolutely zip to me personally. I would not gain anything by having this feature other than a new phone that I don't want or need right now. And I would lose coverage by switching to T-Mobile. I'm sure that there are users that this will benefit, but I'm not one of them. So there is no cause for me to weep.

Learn to read please. In jones 2nd post he typed this: Quote:
I asked him why I should weep when I have no need of this service. He then said it was because tax free unlimited calling would be available, even though I had just said that I have no need for the service. I then proceeded to explain a second time that I have no need for the service. If jones didn't take every opportunity to try and belittle VZW and it's users, then I wouldn't have said anything.
