Default James Bond style Cell phone to control car in works

Drive Your Car with a Cellphone

You may recall that in the James Bond movie, Tomorrow Never Dies, the British secret agent has a nifty Ericsson JB988 mobile phone that can be used to control a BMW car. Well, fact follows fiction and a patent has just been granted for exactly the same sort of mobile phone, although not to Ericsson unfortunately.

The present invention relies on Push to Talk functionality that can be used to control vehicle functions. Thus, one need not remove their keys from their car. Instead, they can simply use their cell phone to lock doors, turn on lights, perform a remote start, open a trunk or hood, activate an alarm system, or perform other vehicle functions.

The patent was awarded to Anil Sahal from the USA.

Cool, no doubt the next phone James Bond movie (Casino Royale with Daniel Craig as 007) will show a phone which can also launch his rockets . I hope Mr. Sahal has closed the frequency loophole so we don't see people with other cell phones being able to open other cars with their cells. The old garage door opener scenario comes to mind where burglars would drive around and use their own garage door opener to open doors by guessing.

Speaking of garage doors, on a similar note my sister has one of those radio control ceiling fans, and after she put it up it would just turn on and off all by itself. It turned out that her neighbor had the same fan in their house and the stray signals would turn each others fans and lights on & off.

That's scary to say the least, I also remember the times when I used to have those 49 Mhz Radio Shack Intercom stations and then our neighbors could hear us on their baby monitor . Furthermore, it was amusing to monitor their baby monitor with my scanner and then hear my youngest brother go over there to play with his friend.
