Suncom Customers Without Service
By Amber Rupinta

(07/23/05 - RALEIGH) — There's still no dial tone for many Suncom Wireless customers in the Triangle. For the last two days about 3000 cell phones have lost service as the company switches over former AT&T subscribers.

"The person you are trying to reach is not accepting calls at this time."

It's not the voicemail thousands of Suncom Wireless customers want, but in the Triangle it is what many, including Gail Scanlon, are getting. "This morning I went to call my number just to check and that's when I got the message I had no service."

Since Thursday, Gail Scanlon has been one of about 3000 frustrated Suncom Wireless customers. She lost service on her cell phone as Suncom and Cingular switch over former AT&T Wireless customers to a new network. "This is a horrible way for them to start out and actually I feel sorry for them."

The company is working hard to get the cell customers back up, saying both Cingular and Suncom have made this a top priority to quickly restore service to affected customers.

Suncom says the interruption of service is due to billing and technical issues leaving customers are unable to make calls or receive them.

"Think they need to do something to compensate in some way the people that have been so inconvenienced."

A Suncom representative says the company does plan to compensate those who lost service and while that may not be enough for Scanlon, Eleanor Hetzel is more understanding. "We'll just stay with them and hope it gets better."

In the meantime, thousands of Suncom cell customers in the Triangle will have to hang up and try again.

While Suncom is working to restore cell service, it is not clear when it will be back up.

If you are experiencing problems with your Suncom cell phone, here is the number you can call for more information: 1-800-218-8348.

I think more churn on it way! Before too long Suncom will be churning more than dairy does for butter.

just saw a similar article in a richmond paper... my question is when the suncom customers leave suncom/cingular/at&t who gets to report the churn? were all the customers who left scom/cing/att here in the va market reported under suncom or cingular?

I agree with AgentHibby, a lot of people will be leaving the company. This is another incident proving the negative experiences people have had with the company.

A simple newspaper ad would probably have reduced the level of frustration. I just don't understand why carriers can't notify people of upgrades, switches etc... The cost of a full page ad in 2 papers for 2 days has to be cheaper than the loss of customers which cost a bundle to acquire in the first place.

That would be a simple and good Public relation idea & wouldn't hurt, I am sure they would loose less people if they were educated on the problems & what to expect.
