It is possible, but the devices have not been released yet. We are waiting for a samsung a790 that should be out shortly which will allow the type of roaming your talking about.

Yes, it is possible.

Samsung brought out a new phone late last year, the SCH-A790. It is 800/1900 MHz CDMA and 900/1800 GSM. It is due to be released in the US by Verizon next month.

China Unicom tested GSM 1X last year. This system was developed by Qualcomm to use the CDMA 1xRTT air interface on the GSM MAP core. The phones used by Unicom should operate on both CDMA and GSM.

These phones operate with the new Qualcomm chipsets. MSM6500

You sure verizon is releasing it directly in the US? Cause I was under the impression it was going to offered to vodafone customers so that they wont lose roaming revenue on T-Mo.

Sorry, but GSM1X does nothing for voice or roaming. It's for data transmission only. The CDMA to GSM roaming would be very difficult due to the way they both use there spectrum.

Hillbilly, this argument may have worked several years ago: before the QCOM GSM/CDMA chipsets and before the successful test by Unicom (the world's number 2 cellular service provider). Today, sorry, the facts speak for themselves.
