Default Home wireless network

I have Alltel's highspeed wireless internet service with my laptop computer using the kyocera aircard. Does anyone know how I can add my desktop computer using my aircard as the modem wirelessly?

You should either be able to setup either a Bluetooth PAN or WiFi ad-hoc network up between the 2 computers, and enable internet sharing over the connection.

Both computers should either have BT or WiFi cards. Create an ad-hoc network, and enable internet sharing. I've never shared a connection like that, but I see no reason why it shouldn't work.

Thank you so much for all the information. My laptop has BT and Wifi, but my desktop has neither, hopefully I can get a wifi card for my desktop and get this system up and running.
Thanks again

You could also get a WiFi router that your wireless card can plug into, than it would work in your house like a normal router would with cable or DSL. Which one to get depends on the exact card you have. If you give us the model number of your card we can point you to a few of them.

Signal Re: Home wireless network

There are lots of EVDO to WIFI routers on the market now . The one I prefer and is the least expensive is the Nexaira

NexConnect 3G Wireless Broadband Router for USB and PCMCIA Type II Cards

Just plug in your Evdo device and it redistributes the signal as WiFi so multiple computers can use the same connection

That's a good solution if you plan to use your 3G connection heavily as the primary internet connection, since you can attach computers to it independently. (Cost=$175)

If you're looking for a temporary or cheap solution, you can get a wifi card for your PC and create an ad-hoc network with your laptop like Jay mentioned. But then both computers need to always be on to share he connection (Cost=$20-$50)

Another similar thing you can do, if you have a router, is to share the signal thru that by giving the ethernet card in your laptop a fixed IP address and enabeling it as the DHCP server (and Windows internet sharing, if using Windows). Then it will assign IP addresses and connections to other PC's that are connected to the router. But of course this requires your laptop to remain on all the time. (Cost=$20-50)

The easiest way I would say is going with the wireless router, because it has ethernet ports for your desktop and of course wireless for your laptop. I would think even if you are using it just temporary, doesn't hurt to prepare for later Also, can't you just connect the two computers together with a crossover cat5 cable and use the internet sharing? Just a thought.

Yes, it can be done with a crossover cable, (not a standard patch cable though). Its been about 8 years since I've done it that way - I didn't even think of that. Now whenever I need to network 2 machines togeather I do it over wireless or BT.

Yeah, I only remembered because I'm going for my CCNA certification and I went over that in the class I'm taking. haha. Its always easier to do it over BT or wireless, but when all that fails, its always good to have a back up. Better safe than sorry.

I think the reason people don't do it that way often is that rollover cables are not common. Last time I did it that way I actually made a rollover cable.

Yes, best to buy on a pre-need basis and keep in your "bag o' tricks". Hopefully, you can get one with a different color sheath than the other cables you carry, for easy recognition.

Yes. Rollover cables used to be much more common. If I remember correctly you used to have to use a rollover cable to connect a router to a broadband modem, but routers now are smart enough to know the difference between a patch cable and a rollover cable, and can reconfigure themselves if patch cables are used.

I thought most modern NIC's were auto sensing now so you don't need a crossover cable anymore.

I know routers are smart enough now, I don't know about NIC's.

Hello nice people at this forum

I am soo blonde here ! New here and can't figure out how to Start a New Post.. Sorry I am just staying on this thread.

So my question is:
Does anyone knew how are where to watch to find out if and when VERIZON will have a wider data area coverage for their Broadband in the South US.?? ( we are in the Jackson, Mississippi area) It looks to be pretty weak here at this time. I have called their CS line - was told " well we don't really have that info until the towers are up and tested.."" well ok----

Darling hubby is ready to go w/ a card for laptops as he travels most of the state in his work, and is chomping at the bit for it to be Verizon.. which is fine with me as his company pays for it !

Anyone have any input regarding Broadband service only in the Southern States? Good and bad comments welcome.

Also any knowledge of when the coverage area will expand for Verizon Broadband only?

Thanks!

Welcome to WA. Hair color does not matter here. To start a new thread in a forum, use the "Post New Thread" button near the top left of the page, above the Threads in Forum gold bar and below the ads.

Good forums to ask this question on are:
  • Wireless Data and Internet (this one)
  • Southern US Wireless Forum
  • Verizon Wireless Users

Please pick one - if you don't get a prompt response, try another. Double-posting is considered bad form. Hope you get the info you are looking for, although information about the future is often hard to come by.
