I assume that "wireless" in your diagram is not an actual device, just that you want to connect your other 2 devices wirelessly. In that case you need a "wireless access point" such as this one from Linksys.

Then your diagram becomes:

Code:
adsl->router->hub->laptop1        --150ft--         laptop2
                      |--> AP            --of air--         n91
If this doesn't seem to meet your needs, perhaps you can clarify your question.

A few more things you need to know:

1) All of the above assumes that one of your devices can serve as a source of IP addresses to all the devices inside the router, that is, it provides DHCP service.

2) Some Internet service providers restrict you to one IP address, bound to one piece of hardware, in this case your laptop1. You can get around this by paying them extra money for a fancier home networking device/service or, you can do it yourself with something like the following.

3) The combination router-hub-AP is so useful that clever manufacturers have put them all in one box such as the WRT54G, also from Linksys. Technically, the "hub" in this device is really a switch - rather than sharing the total bandwidth among all ports, each port is independent and has the maximum rated bandwidth. A detail you may not notice in practice but it's nice to have.

4) The WRT54G, probably the most popular and highly rated device of its type, provides DHCP, so all your devices will automatically get an internal IP address.

5) It also can pretend that it is the computer that you originally registered with your ISP. Look up "MAC address cloning" in the manual. If you do this, you don't have to pay your ISP extra every month for having a home network.

I'm not sure what you are trying to say here. Your original diagram showed laptop1 as the wireless source. This is not the recommended way of connecting multiple devices to the Internet. If you do what I suggested and either:

1) plug a wireless access point into your hub, or better yet

2) substitute an all-in-one router/switch/access point,

you can definitely have as many devices as you want on the Internet. In that case you can connect those devices via an ethernet cable to any open port on the hub or switch, or via wireless to your AP. The router will present 1 IP address to the external world, but will create as many internal IP addresses as you need (up to 256).

Does this answer your question?

You're welcome.

An AP should work, although you may want to check prices. Today on pcconnection.com (a very reputable source I can personally recommend) the full featured router/switch/AP (WRT54G, $44.95 with mail-in rebate) is actually cheaper than their AP (WAP54G, $59.95 with mail-in rebate). I can't explain this.

Besides price, advantages of getting the WRT54G are that

1) you only have 1 device to configure/manage.

2) you get 1 additional free wired port, since the AP isn't taking a port

3) I know that DHCP, NAT and MAC address cloning work on this. They may work on your current router too, but if they don't work for some reason, you should definitely get the WRT54G. That is, you don't want to get the access point and then find out you needed a new router all along.

Good luck!

I own a WRT54G and would like to validate an idea ...

If I connect to the Internet via my Motorola e815 cellphone and then
tie the cellphone to my laptop via the USB cable can I hand my WRT54G
off the RJ45 10/100 connector on the laptop and share access with our
other laptop?

While I would prefer to do all of this under Linux (and there are some
efforts to make that happen elsewhere, e.g.
Puppy Linux Discussion Forum :: View topic - Motorola e815 cellphone works as Linux (ubuntu) Modem
I am willing to make it happen under the MS version of windows called XP.

Is there any reason this would not work, please?

Anyone done it and have the process spelled out?

(I may also post this in a new thread elsewhere on the Forum in case this one
is too stale and gets missed.)

Thanks! doc
