Question Verizon CDMA2000 1x Access ?

I've now tested the dial-up speed with my Verizon Wireless Nokia 6256i via IrDA, Bluetooth and cable connection. In all cases I dialed #777 to connect to Verizon Wireless and used qnc as both my username and password. The speed utility at www.dslreports.com/mspeed gives a data transfer rate of 11 k baud for all three connections.

There was some discussion that I could also connect to Verizon's higher speed CDMA2000 1x service also using my minutes instead of subscribing to a separate data plan. This is not necessary but would be nice. Is this possible? If so, how do I make the connection? Do I dial a different number, or is there some other way to get connected to the higher speed CDMA2000 1x service?

It's simple to set up.

You'll need to change your modem initialization string to AT$QCMDR=3, use [your 10-digit phone number]@vzw3g.com as the username, and vzw as the password.

Remember, this will use minutes, so take advantage of those free nights and weekends.

No joy. I get an authenticaton failure. Do you have any of the optional data services? I do not and wonder if that is the problem. I do have GIN enabled as I believe that is necessary for even the slow speee dial-up service.

I only have minutes, so that is not the problem. Authentication failure sounds like you have some settings on your pc incorrect. Double-check everything.

Also, I assume I don't use the [ ] around my 10-digit phone number.

Yeah, #777 is the number to dial and your username should be something like 0123456789@vzw3g.com

Thanks once again. That is the number I'm using. I have a Nokia 6256i that does not have EVDO but does have 1x and says so right on the screen. Is it possible I need a different modem init string? Are these publshed anywhere?

Also, I'm trying to make a PPP connection, is that correct, or should it be SLIP or CSLIP. (I'm using a Palm Tungsten C via the IrDA port on the phone by the way.) That connection works just fine with the slow speed connection.

I may not have 3G service in area where I live. The Verizon map for ZIP 12027 shows we have NationalAccess and Enhanced Services but not Broadband Access and VCAST services.

Since I don't need this where live, I'll have to give it a try the next time I travel to a real city.

What modem initialization string were you using for QNC with the Nokia?

And yes, you want to use a PPP connection.

None. (And this is to fill space since "none" was too short an answer )

You should search the web for some more information on using VZW EN with your phone.

I will, but can you tell me if your area is listed by Verizon as having Broadband and VCAST service or just send your ZIP code if would rather not check the map.

Thanks for all your help. I will search for more info on my phone.

You don't need Broadband (EV-DO) or VCAST to use 1x modem access. I've been using it for over a year and my brother-in-law used his vx4400 2.5 years ago.

I just talked with Verizon data service tech support. (It took me three tries to get to someone who even understood what qnc and 3g were.)

I was told that I need the extra cost Verizon NationalAccess plan to use 3g. That is consistent with with I am seeing when I try to connect, basically that I do connect but have an authentication failure, which is the way I would expect the system to act if I can make a successful connection but do not have a valid "account".

Now either all you folks are wrong or the man from Verizon is a bald face lier. I do wonder which is correct?

Actually I was asking if you need to be in an area that has Broadband and VCAST service. The area where I live does not have this service.

You do not have to be in an EVDO area to use 1x dial up access. Of course the rep will tell you that you need an additional package/charge on your account, but it should work. There must be something we're missing about how to connect your phone to use 1x dun. Maybe VZW blocked it???
I've just used 1x DUN earlier today and it works just fine.

Andy - you have been very helpful and I do want to thank you for your continued help. Let me go through the details and perhaps something will pop out.

First, I am NOT using any Verizon software in case that matters. I have been making data calls since the days of the Model 100 and acoustic couplers and aligator clips to connect to hardwired phones. But those were also that days when I could "talk" directly to the modem command interface and I had a list of modem AT commends, neither of which applies in this situation.

When I use the Palm Tungsten C over IrDA I set the Palm-to-Nokia connection speed to 115,200 baud. I use Automatic Flow Control. I can connect to the qnc network without problems. When trying to connect to the 3g network the phone seems to connect but then the phone hangs up (Data Call Ended) and the Palm reports an authentication error. The behavior is the same both with and without the modem INIT string: AT$QCMDR=3.

My laptop runs under Win98SE. I have the Nokia USB data cable and the Nokia cable drivers that include the modem drivers. I have not installed the Nokia PC Suite since it will not run under Win98SE. Using the Nokia cable I am able to easily connect to the Verizon qnc network using a normal Windows DUN and with modem initi string. For the qnc connection I use 19,200 baud over the cable.

When I try to connect to the Verizon 3g network I set the speed higher, probably aboput 115 k baud, and add the modem init string to the "Additional Commands" box in the DUN. (Why doesn't MS call this what it is?) With the init string the DUN reports that the modem is not ready. Without the init commands I believe the DUN does dial the phone and I believe I get the same results as with the Palm T|C. (This makes me wonder if the T|C is really sending the init string and if the init string is correct for my phone.) The laptop is in the middle of a backup session so I can't confirm that the cable connection without the modem initi string works exactly the same as the IrDA connection, but I do know that the behavior of the cable connection with and without the init string is different while on the Palm T|C it is the same with and without.

The Nokia shows a 1x symbol on the screen all the time, so I believe that function is enabled. The Palm and the Windows DUN are both set for PPP. The cable is using hardware flow control.

That seems to be all. Please let me know if you find anything.

Vic

You are welcome. I am glad to be of help to you!
Try the following:
Open System/Hardware and go to Modem Properties. Under the Advanced tab, copy and paste the following string into the "Extra intialization commands" box:
+crm=1;+cso=33

Wow! I'm in. Let me disconnect my Ethernet connection so the phone is my only connection and test the speed. Will be right back.
