Varies greatly from about .5 miles up to maybe 10 miles or so. Average is about 2-6 miles.

In cities the range is usually not too big, because of capacity reasons, but out in not so populated areas the range can be 10+ miles, Verizon's boomer site in Moab covers a hell of a lot, for example. Sometimes even in town while on a call on the VZW network, one of the active pilots will be from a site 5+ miles away(but that doesn't last long usually).

CDMA towers also exhibit the phenomenon called "cell breathing" where effective range drops as it nears capacity. So the definite answer is that there IS no definite answer to that question.
