At 7:30 PM tonight (4/16/07) I will be attending the City of Orange Planning Commission hearing. Two of the items being heard are a Metro PCS and a Sprint/Nextel antenna. The Sprint antenna will be in a location that I can really benefit from as I spend a lot of my time just 1/2 mile away from the proposed location. I'm also hoping it will improve the NID border situation but this all depends on which NID they decide to place it on once it goes to RF. Since Sprint has always botched their NID splits in the past I'm not holding out much hope but hey anything is possible. Maybe this time they will finally get it right! At the very least it will greatly improve IDEN service which has always been a little lacking in this part of my City. Unfortunately my item of interest in last on the agenda so I might be there until 10PM or 11PM. http://www.cityoforange.org/civica/f...sp?BlobID=5334 |

Piece of cake! The Sprint project was approved by a 4-0 vote (one member absent). I didn't even need to speak in support because no NIMBY's showed up and the commission had no objections to it either. Interestingly the Metro PCS project did draw NIMBY's and was postponed until May 21st for alternate proposals. LOL!

Images: 146 | They were two totally different type of projects. Metro wanted to co-locate and add panels to an existing Sprint monopole in a different area. But residents in that area wanted them to agree to replace the pole with a monopalm or monopine and make it look better. The city was concerned that they didn't look into other possibilities for a better location. But I think they still would have approved it if it wasn't for a few technical mistakes in Metro's application that they wanted fixed.

Larry, Have you considered serving on the Planning Commission? I applied to be on my city's commission recently, but found there really wasn't any need. They were handling cellular applications very logically. Some zoning applications were actually proactive enough that they include space for cellular antennas in their plans. Instead, I was appointed to the local homeowners board which is very agreeable to cellular service. We have a very tight convenent-controlled community, but it's also on the high ground of the region, and cellular space rental makes up a big part of our community income. When we added Cricket last winter, we now support all carriers except t-Mobile. It is truly a surprise to see so much enlightened thinking here when there is so much resistance elsewhere. We need more bright people in the the right places. |

As an aside, the "high ground" here is also where we have our water towers, on which the cellular antennas are mounted. We are selling the water towers to a different water district who will eventually bury the water towers underground. This means they will provide a structure for the antennas of these 6 carriers. This should be interesting since they'll need to be 'disguised'. Winter Park has a "pine tree" with 5 carriers on it, I wonder what we'll get. Oh, I guess that'll be my job...oh no. | |
