The most infamous dead spot for Verizon Wireless subscribers in Los Angeles is gone, gone, GONE! I was doing some errands in the foothills last week, and took La Tuna Cyn. Rd. to the 210, and as I was approaching the canyon itself, my phone rang. My phone NEVER rings in that canyon, it has always been as dead as Pauly Shore's career. Later, as I was headed back up the 210, I was on the phone listening to a conference call. I missed the La Tuna Canyon exit because I wasn't paying enough attention, and ended up getting off at Sunland -- and stayed on the phone the whole time. I don't know what they did but it's gone, gone, GONE! |

This area works for other carriers? If so, it shouldn't have taken them so long!

It has been there since Verizon (formerly AirTouch) started; the attached shows the "drop" zone (where you might have registered one bar of service but you would drop your calls) -- the "x"es mark the two new towers (according to VZW store employees). There's still a huge dead spot, mostly in the southeast of the marked dead zone, but it's in the middle of the completely uninhabited Verdugo Mountains with no access save dirt fire roads. The west tower is atop an elementary school and services the horse properties in the western reaches of La Tuna Canyon Rd and the industrial buildings of the eastern side of Tuxford Rd. The east tower is at the top of the hill just northwest of the La Tuna Canyon interchange with the 210 and services the entire Tujunga grade on the 210 as well as a lot of eastern La Tuna Canyon Rd. |

What's strange Zaphod is that when i've driven on the 210 on that same spot in the past i've had low signal but i still maintain my call, wonder if it was just the phone i was using, LG 6000, i have noticed improvements with Sprint though on that same spot...

Sprint added 2 new sites along the 210 freeway, one on both ends of the mountain range near La Tuna Cyn. up on the Edison tower, no dropped calls now. This was completed 6-12 months ago.

Sprint also has the 241 toll road dead spot. I think a new tower is going to be built along there soon which will hold up to 4 carriers.

I just went through La Tuna (as a passenger, wasn't my day to drive) and watched my phone on field-test mode. There's still a little bit of a nasty spot as you leave "civilisation" and go toward the hills -- it registered -99dBm but the phone's signal meter still showed one tick. Once I got past the boulders and around the bend, I showed -82dBm and it was all happy and warm and fuzzy. As we got on the 210 (east) toward Pasadena I had -42dBm and the phone was practically buzzing with signal.

Nice... but a -99dBm signal is strong enough if the Ec/Io is good, but a lot of times that's not the case with signals that low.
