Default Irvine, California

Am I the only one who seems to get huge dead zones in Irvine? I have Verizon, and I can't seem to get very good coverage around the UCI area. I get only one or two bars outside at University Research Park, and I get one or no bars at University Town Centre! I've tried updating the PRL and this hasn't solved the problem! Does anyone else use Verizon or any other carriers in this area?

Irvine can be a tough city for coverage. There aren't a whole lot of places to build cell towers, especially around UCI and also in the Turtle Rock where the City Council has routinely denied access to the wireless carriers. The blame can probably be blamed on the Irvine City planning commission and city council.

I was wondering about that. My friend lives in Turtle Rock and I get absolutely no coverage at her house. That is kind of nice though because it keeps my parents from bothering me while I'm there. :-) I saw something about Sprint suing the city of Irvine, was that related to the Irvine City Council's refusal to allow companies to build cell towers? I'm too lazy to go look at that thread. Does any carrier seem to get better coverage in Irvine than others? Thanks!

I felt guilty for my laziness, so I went and looked at the thread. That is classic Orange County. "Fashion over function." Not wanting cell phone towers because they are an "eye sore" and then complaining when they don't get coverage!!! GRR!!! Texas, here I come!

Yep the Sprint/Turtle Rock situation has been a battle for over 5 years now. Cingular also got rejected to build a tower in Turtle Rock 3 years ago.

Do you work right off of Bison and California Ave? Close to McArthur and the 73?

That area is absolutely horrible for the wireless carriers.

Irvine can be really hit or miss. Once you are on University or the 405 FWY, you're alright. But that spot where you are at is bad.

I had your 8100 before and the reception wasn't too hot. It worked fine everywhere else but there. My friend gave me his Moto e815 and I noticed the service improved while using that handset.

My Helio device goes to roam within the parking lot right off of Bison on my recent visit but as you noted even VZW isn't too hot.

To be honest, in that particular spot, I've used a Moto v300 from T-Mobile and it worked slightly better. The downside is that down the street off of Campus T-Mobile has zero service in a lot of the stores just west of the dorms. It's like you can't win. LOL.

My advice: Try a Motorola. Find an used Moto V710 or Moto e815. Verizon just pulled the e815 from its' website but it was selling it for $49.99 on a 2 year renewal. You can also try a new RAZR or even v276 if you prefer an extendable antenna.

Irvine makes me laugh, all the carriers have offices/switches there yet the coverage is horrid. Too bad the city is so strict

My company has an office there that I work at, but I primarily work at our office on Newport Center Drive. The reception is excellent there for Cingular, T-Mobile, and Verizon. However, I'm going off to college in San Antonio in about three weeks, so reception in Irvine and the likes won't be much of an issue anymore.
