I have just a quick question: which frequency does Cingular use in California? 1900 or 850, or both? It seems like there is very little selection of phones for the 850 MHz band, sadly. PS. If it makes any difference, I live in the Central Valley in California. |

I believe that Cingular uses both bands in most places in California, so I'd definitely get a handset that can do both the 800 and 1900 frequencies.

Yes, I wasn't sure because I had read that when Cingular and AT&T combined, Cingular sold off part of their network to T-Mobile, so I'm not sure if Cingular was left with just one frequency here. I currently have a phone that uses both frequencies, but I want to upgrade. I'm just not sure.

Yep they definitely switched to using both GSM 850/1900 since they took over AT&T's old dual-band network as part of the merger. T-Mobile got the complete old GSM 1900-only network which was the old co-shared Cingular/T-Mobile network.

At the moment, UMTS is only on 1900. This will change once HSDPA and the spectrum they need on 850 is available (when TDMA is switched off).
