Sprint is about to release the Treo 650 and there's no release in sight for Verizon. The 650 looks like the first smartphone worth it's weight (although I've been using a Kyocera 7135 with pretty good success for almost 2 years now). Anyway, I'm considering the switch to Sprint but am nervous about decrease in coverage. I used to be a Sprint customer a couple of years ago and was amazed at the improvement with Verizon. Has Sprint improved (I live in Denver) over the past couple of years? Does "Free and Clear America" actually increase coverage (by tapping into Verizon towers) or is it just a way to have a flat rate for roaming as opposed to a per minute charge? I remember roaming sometimes on Sprint but even with roaming the coverage was not even close to Verizon... |

Yes, Sprint has improved in the Denver area, through their acquisition of Qwest Wireless and through roaming agreaments with VZW. When I had Sprint and I went into an area of no Sprint service it would switch to VZW's towers (In the Cherry Creek Mall on the west end for example).

Yes Sprint improved a great deal this year in Denver with the Qwest towers they picked up. Bill Radio of mountainwireless.com is based in Denver and will confirm these improvements.

I can't really attest to ow Sprint service in Denver is, but I might consider waiting until the first part of 05. From what I have read Sprint basically bought most of the initial production of the Treo 650, however it should be relseased on other carrriers in early 05. I had the Treo 600 until I killed it with my foot and general all around stupidity a few weeks ago. I think this time around if I buy another Treo 650 it will be GSM this time tough. But anyway my point was you might actually be able to get it on VZW soon. |

Yes, Sprint has improved in the Denver area, although Verizon is still Number one coverage wise.

Thanks for all the replies. To WirelessBeachBum, can you divulge any more about Verizon and smartphones--are you referring to Treo 650 or any other Palm OS units? Also, is Sprint's "roaming" on Verizon towers seamless (i.e. if I'm in a call and get out of Sprint's network, will it pick up the VZW tower without dropping the call?)--when I was a Sprint customer 2 years ago, it seemed that the call would be dropped and then roaming would kick in... |

There's no such thing as CDMA inter-carrier roaming handoffs so no it's not seamless.
