I am new to this forum and have been reading a lot of great stories about this little gadget. But I have couple questions before I can finalize my decision to purchase this unit. I tried going to the websites (t-moble.com. danger.com, hiptop.com) but none of them give out this information. I even called their phone support line.

1) Does it work like a Palm where you can freely download software into the unit?
2) Is there a desktop software to synch the PIM data?
3) When will the color version come out?
4) What is the resolution of the camera?

Thank you for your help in advance

This is the reply from Danger.com about the HIPTOP device.

"Greetings,
Thanks for your email and patience. I will try to address your questions as best as I can.

1. At this time, users will not be able to download software into their Sidekick. However, we intend on launching our formal developer program in 2003. At this time, the ability to download software should be available.

2. The availability of software to sync desktop and device is not available. Danger is currently working with Pumatech on developing a sync feature.

3. There are no immediate plans for a color device. Danger just recently launched the Sidekick (16 shades of gray) in October and our focus is on our current product and making it successful.

4. The resolution of the camera is 120 x 90 pixels.

5. You will not be able to use the Sidekick as a modem for your laptop.

I hope this was helpful. Please do not hesitate to write us back if you have any additional questions or comments. Thanks and I wish you well.

Best Regards,
Ron Cheung
Danger, Inc."

I think I will buy this from Amazon.com now, they have the best rebate anywhere. Price after rebate is $99

I want to know ... how do you use it as a basic phone - how do you dial a number? Do you have to use the small keys on the 'qwerty' keyboard or is there a number pad somewhere?

Actually, there are 3 ways as I know:

1. use the qwerty keyboard
2. use an existing contact record
3. use the wheel to scroll to each digit then press the wheel to select it. So basically, you have to do it at least 7 times for a local number (this is really difficult and annoying)

Just in case people are wondering, the device does not have a touch screen.

Given that it is GSM, and uses a SIM, I presume you can simply remove the SIM from this device and pop it into a regular GSM phone (unlocked, or T-Mobile locked) if you want to make regular calls? The beauty of SIMs!

It is true that T-mobile is GSM and it uses SIM cards but the info on a SIM in a Sidekick is programmed only for Danger Sidekick and would not work in a GSM phone.

But besides the Sidekick, the SIM cards can be switched from any other GSM phone to another.
