I was told that T-Mobile has a phone-upgrade "department" and they offer "...discounts off of upgrade phones based on how long you've been a customer and your pricing plan." I was wondering if anyone's done this, and what your experience was? How much of a discount? etc. etc. etc.

That's really intriguing ... I'd be interested in hearing about this too. I tend to upgrade my phones regularly ... it'd be nice not to be penalized for it.

call them direct at 888-567-9910. The process works fine, as long as you like the price. You get your phone in a few days, keep the old one, and the cost gets added to your bill. Discounts range from 25, 50, 75, or $100 off the (I believe) suggested retail price of the phone. I'm not sure why but that's not always the "before rebate" price in the store. The maximum is reached after two years service depending on your plan. For instance I am on the family plan ($70). After one year, I was offered a $75 discount, after two years $100. I have heard the discounts may have changed recently, but I don't know for sure. you have to extend your contract for one year when you do this (no changes to the terms) or if you are out of contract, agree to one year of service.

Yes, they're upgrade discounts have changed recently. I have been a customer for almost 2 year now (January), and last week I called and asked what price they could give me on the S105, and they told me $225, that is a $125 discount. I think that is because I was out of contract though, but that is still a huge discount. That's cheaper than what new customers get it for.

For the best deals....hit up the retentions folk. Out of contract customers who call to cancel usually are transferred there and they do waaay better in dealing with phone discounts. I've been out of contract for a month, called to cancel, told them I was switching to AT&T GSM becauce I fancied their color phone for $50, he quoted a Samsung S105 for $270 at first, then I told him it was out of my price range and he then offered it for $170 with $20 'service credit'....so basically he came down to $150 for $300 phone. And oh yeah, I had to extend for a year but it was no biggie cause I love the service and just played the extortion game to get a good deal. |

Hehe...that's pretty clever I may do it when my contract is up. I thought about doing it to get the T68i, but they'll probably have something better out when my contract is up. I'm happy to hear they don't change your rate plan or anything when you extend your contract; way to go T-Mobile! |
