Nextel in LA is awful. Have had numerous dropped calls and lousy service. The wireless web is great tho. I just spoke to customer service, and it turns out they are simply overwhelmed in LA, chicago, NY, Boston, and the South. They have run out of #'s in the south she told me. I'd use Verizon in Cali.

I guess it depends on where in LA you go.. I live down in the southbay area and it works great -- even better than my AT&T digital phone (not the GSM stuff).. I can even get a good signal two floors below ground in our parking garage! Go figure! My advice is try it out and see how it behaves.. X-addict |

I just got Nextel and I've been an avid user of AT&T Wireless GSM. So far, my Motorola i95cl with Nextel works wonders! The direct connect is so convenient as well as their unlimited text messaging and wireless web. I've gotten great reception in my house and while I am traveling on the 110, 405 and 91. No problems at all. I live in the South Bay area as well and I would recommend Nextel. ALOT of businesses use it. What more do you need?

I don't know about the rest of the state, but there is no Nextel coverage up here in Lake and Mendocino Counties in Northern California, along with many other areas like Yreka, Weed, Shasta area, Susanville, Burney, Lake Almanor, Chester and Alturas.

I've been using AT&T for years, but their service quality in L.A. has decreased to the point of unreliability, beginning this past summer. I tried Verizon, but experienced coverage holes in critical areas where I depend on coverage (within the metropolitan L.A. area, too). I finally made the switch to Nextel in early November and have been quite happy so far. I've experience much more consistent call connection while driving using Nexgtel, which means VERY FEW dropped calls, particuarly while on the freeways. I love Nextel's data and web features, the speakerphone is great (compared to the Panasonic crap that AT&T peddles), and the building penetration ability is impressive. Color me happy. My wife is keeping her AT&T phone, 'cause of the full install Nokia carkit that she has and won't part with. Nextel, where are your carkits? (one of Motorola's weaknesses). I signed up for the Breakthrough 10000 plan, which is worth checking out. It's on Nextel's homepage. Good luck! |

I have had Nextel for 4 years now...and I love it. Great company....great customer service....great reception where I have been. I travel to LA often from San Francisco and its great in both cities. I stay in West LA (Westwood, Bel Air, Bev Hills, Santa Monica, and also the Valley) and the service is great. All around the Bay Area the signal is great and is also expanding to less traveled areas. They have some great deals, and stick with either the i90 or i95 for great reception....I have gotten the best reception with those phones. GOOD LUCK!

I use Nextel for work and more often than not there is no signal on the jobsite. The sad thing is no signal no direct connect. I would think they could make it so you could still contact workers within a mile or so of a jobsite without signal like a walkie-talkie. Ken |
