Hello everyone, I have been reading some of the threads on here and I'm researching to buy a cell phone. I'm just not sure who I want to sign up with. I have never had a cell phone before so I need advice on which wireless provider to go with. I have friends and relatives who use or have used all of the carriers. I don't think I want to go with Cingular cause I have heard nothing but complaints about it from my cousin and my friend. They both despise Cingular. From what I understand, here in CA, T-Mobile is the same as Cingular. If that's true I would want to stay away from them too. I haven't heard much about Nextel or Sprint. Most people I talk to like Verizon and AT&T. But I want to hear from all of you experts out there. What I want and need is a company that has the best overall coverage. I know and understand that no company is perfect and that you will get dropped calls or areas of no service with all of the carriers. I just want to know who has the best coverage and service, preferably digital. I am mainly in the southern California area and I travel infrequently, though there are times I will travel up and down the state and into neighboring states. Rarely will I travel to the midwest or east coast, though at times I will. Any help would be greatly appreciated. David |

Based on what you said, I would choose Verizon hands down. They have the best coverage overall especially in the So Cal area.

David, I have had Sprint back from 98-01 and had Cingular from 01-02. Currently have Verizon and so far I'm happy with them. Before I settled on Verizon, I tried out AT&T's GSM and TDMA, T-Mobile, and Sprint. I also did a lot of research on the internet on cell phone technology and where it's headed. I hung out in here for about two months really asking people who I should go with. In my honest opinion here are my ratings of the cell phone companies: 1. AT&T GSM was the worst and their TDMA is going down the tubes as well. I say give them another year or two before you consider them. 2. Cingular/T-Mobile were both the same; busy signals, dropped calls, call quality was mediocre. 3. Sprint was surprisingly very good. I had them for three years and I jumped ship to Cingular for a year. Within that year they surpassed Cingular and made it a really tough decision for me to choose between Verizon and Sprint. They had some dead spots just like everyone else but they had strong coverage where they had it. 4. Verizon, I found to be pretty equal to Sprint, but I chose them because of reputation. I guess what it comes down to is if what you want is coverage you can't go wrong with Sprint or Verizon, they both have CDMA technology. One thing I will say though is that it seems like Verizon goes to analog alot. I don't know who has the bigger digital coverage but I would recommend one of the two. By the way, what part of southern Cali are you in? |

So then I guess Sprint and Verizon would be the two I choose between, right? Anyone else have anything to add? I really need the best digital coverage, mainly here in southern California where I spend 99% of the time. I need to make my decision within the next couple of weeks, because I really need a cell phone. Any help is appreciated. David |

HyeD I did a hands on with almost all the phones and providers in OC....I have to admit I should have gone with Vrz when att gave me the chance...But hind sight is 20/20 I have to say that I think Vrz and Sprint are your best choices...I loved the quality that they both had, voice and coverage...???I'd like to know which one has the better digital coverage in so cal (if anyone has any thoughts on that)???... I know when my contract is up that I'm changing providers...I'm thinking that Vrz is slightly better than sprint.... But...thats just my thoughts on this whole thingy. |

Thanks all for your opinions. Jodi, have you guys tried Sprint at all? It seems that everyone is telling me to go with either Sprint or Verizon. I'd like to make my decision in a week. David |

Cingular and T-Mobile are good now. How can some of you say you had T-Mobile a year ago, and they didn't even exist in Cali a year. They just did this agreement with Cingular in July.

Sprint is the one company I haven't tried. In fact, when looking for a new provider it was between Sprint & VZW (T-Mobile came into the mix, but was eliminated quickly). I knew people who had both Sprint or VZW. We ended up with VZW because I knew many more in the OC county who LOVED VZW (some have been with them for several years!) so we bit the bullet. Plus, my feedback I received about Sprint in the El Toro area was spotty. My husband works there & we needed the reliable service. Hope this helps! Jodi | |

Someone above said this, "2. Cingular/T-Mobile were both the same; busy signals, dropped calls, call quality was mediocre." They were not both the same. As far as these issues of busy signals and dropped calls go; Those are capacity problems, and those are a thing of the past. They have more than doubled the capacity of their shared network in that area, each company has their own switches to handle their own calls. |

I think what happened is that he was on Cingular and then thought "Oh but Cingular and T-Mobile share network", thus "Cingular/T-Mobile". The capacity upgrades happened right before T-Mobile launched, so I suspect that Cingular and T-Mobile are much better choices now. That said, Verizon is still the best for coverage as they managed to erect towers (as Airtouch) before people starting complaining about it. I find, however, that the sound quality is a factor based on phone, not necessarily on provider... my Samsung has crappy voice quality and my Moto is fine, and they're both on T-Mobile.

Thanks for the info on the Samsung, because I was getting ready to get on of those for my mother, but since you have commented on the sound-quality of the phone, then I will find another phone to get her. I just give her my 8390 though when I get my 7210, but I really wanted to sell my 8390 because they are limited stock now and I could get alot for it, but I'll think of something, thanks again.

What I meant was that I had Cingular for a year. When I was rating all the providers I just combined Cingular/T-Mobile into one because they have the same coverage. They use the same towers. I didn't mean to say that T-Mobile had the busy problems and dropped calls, etc. Sorry for the confusion. By the way, VZW rocks at my house like no other!!!!!!!! No other wireless provider works well up here except VZW.

Aiwapro: You might consider the Moto P280, apparently it's a good mix of battery life and RF power. I heavily pan the R225M. Or buy her a Nokia 6190 off of eBay.

I would go with Verizon, hands down. Sprint may have decent coverage in So Cal, but I can tell you from Experience, when you travel outside of a major metro area (Especially where I reside in Michigan) your sprint phone becomes a very nice paperweight. Whereas your Verizon phone will still function as intended. I have traveled all over the U.S. and I have only found a few spots that my Verizon phones will not work. Verizon has so few dead areas that I have found that I can literally count them on one hand. I was with them when they were Cellular One, then they changed to Airtouch, and then to Verizon. If they weren't the best, I would not be going into my 11th year as a VZW/Airtouch/Cellular One customer.

Hey rally, does Verizon have better DIGITAL coverage than Sprint in southern California and in the United States or just overall including analog. It seems like Verizon goes analog a lot.

BB - I haven't spent a LOT of time in So Cal, most of the time I was on the West coast I was in San Francisco, Napa, and Sacramento. However, I never really had a problem with dropping into analog (until we decided to drive to Reno in the middle of the night) =) What I have noticed is that 99% of the time, if my Verizon phone did drop into analog, Sprint was absolutely no service at all. I have only had a few places where my verizon phone dropped into analog for an extended period of time, (the upper peninsula of michigan comes to mind immediately), but Verizon is also the ONLY provider that I have found that will work the majority of the way to the tip of the U.P. (one dead spot for about 6 miles that I encountered about 8 miles West of the MIDDLE OF FREAKIN' NOWHERE! There is also a spot that I have found in Tennessee around where I have family that Verizon is the only provider that will work at all(albeit in analog, but analog is still better than nothing at all). These are really the only places I have had problems and not had digital coverage. I travel through MI, IN, OH, KY, TN, AL, MS, GA, PA, NY, NJ, IL, WI, MO, AK, and OK and have experienced coverage with Sprint that ranged from fair, to spotty, to absolutely non-esistant for many many miles. Just my opinion, maybe someone with a little more time in the So Cal area would be a little more helpful for California specific coverage, but as far as nationwide, I have found no company that beats Verizon. Wow, I need to lay off the coffee, that was a REALLY long post.

HyeDgha I can definately say a resounding NOOOOOO to trying Att . Whether it be tdma or gsm. Tdma was decent, but since the lauching of gsm in OC area they suck...Gsm is too new to be good and apparently its killing tdma....I didn't used to have a problem with my service but now I know I should have taken the out when given the chance....somebody call the waaaaaaambulance... |

What about the JD Powers rankings that came out? AT&T killed everyone including Verizon!!!! Do these rankings mean anything? AT&T owned California except in San Diego I think in those rankings (Verizon won that one). I don't think Sprint won even one!!!! Does this mean I should go with AT&T? What does JD Power awards look at? In here I keep hearing how bad AT&T has become, my friends who have AT&T have also told me that their cell phones haven't been working as good lately, for the past month or so. They used to be really happy with their service even claiming it was the best. Looks like I will choose between Verizon and Sprint now. David |

JD Powers rankings are only on the customer service not coverage or quality... I haven't had any problems with customer service... But Just consider Verizon or Sprint...not att at all..those in my opinion are the only 2 I would consider. I will be chosing one of them soon...the coverage and quality is the Best in OC... You can't go wrong with either... |
