I believe so. I think you just get a new contract for another year or two.

Three days is pretty fast. You should contact the place where you got your phone from to see if your offer was only good for that particular plan. Is your phone free because you have to send in rebates? If so, then usually you need 30 days of service before they process your rebate. In most cases, an upgrade would not be a problem because it means they get more money from you. I'm in the same situation. I have three lines and for one of them, I purchased the minimum plan required to get a $200 phone free (from a store). If I want to downgrade my plan, then I'll need to do it after a month or two (when the rebate is processed). The store employee confirmed that this was fine to do.

I would double check with the place that the phone came from just to be safe.

I forgot to add that your contract term does NOT get extended when you change the type of plan you have.
