CDMA in Alaska is provided by Alaska DigiTel/Sparks Wireless (same company, different name in different cities) and (soon) ACS Wireless. -SC

Alaska DigiTel/Sparks has had (very weak, from what I understand) roamer-only GSM coverage in the major cities for awhile, Dobson is naturally going GSM, Alaska Wireless in Dutch Harbor is GSM (850) and has been since day one, and ASTAC in Barrow/etc. is going GSM. Some very small rural carriers (some of which have no roaming agreements with anyone, or roam only with other Alaska carriers) are planning to stay TDMA-only or even AMPS-only for the foreseeable future. -SC

Was searching for some current information on expansion of CDMA coverage in Alaska and this site came up on Google. Since this thread is so old I thought I might update it a bit about Alaska. I am seeking some information if another reader has regarding expansion plans for Alaska. So, here is an update on Alaska for those interested. Today there are two CDMA carriers in Alaska. Alaska Digitel and Alaska Communications System (ACS). ACS is by far the dominant carrier, ACS offers 3G services. Unfortunately, its' CDMA coverage is extremely limited in Southeast Alaska (panhandle), only Juneau thus far. This is the case, notwithstanding promises of coverage upgrades within a year of introduction in this part of Alaska. If anyone with ACS or Digitel is listening, we're still waiting..... Dobson Cellular acquired, AT&T's Alaska sites and has pretty good coverage. In the panhandle, they are superior for the moment. Most other areas of Alaska, where there are populated settlements, Anchorage, Wasilla-Palmer (Mat-Su Valley), Kenai Peninsula and Fairbanks have very good coverage both GSM and CDMA. Also, some good news if traveling the Alaska Highway in Canada, coverage is fairly good. It's going to get much better in Yukon (territory), Ca in the next few years. I think GSM will be getting better there as well as GSM. The Yukon and other territorial governments have decided to cooperate on some kind of dual GSM/CDMA technology. Its' called ICE or so I've read, I don't fully understand it, but suffice it to say if you decide to drive to Alaska in the next few years, highway coverage should get much better) - in Yukon, Canada at least. Anyone hear news of when CDMA will be expanded in Alaska? Let me know. Thanks. |

ACS Wireless also just launched CDMA and EVDO service in Kodiak Alaska! It's about time a decent wireless carrier moved in there! The companies already there were charging a fortune! --Jason |
