Default ATT GSM in Calif Central Valley

I switched to ATT GSM in the Stockton area about a week ago. I went with the T68m. The voice reception leaves something to be desired. I have a signal everywhere I had a TDMA signal but generally only 1-3 bars with static and the t68 picks up a lot of background noise.

My signal strength will go from full five bars down to three, then 1 then back up to five without ever moving the phone.

Has anyone else had similar experiences? Has anyone used the siemens s46 or the noikia 8390 with better success?

Just thought others might have some experiences to share. The AT&T folks blame the GSM network and suggested it wasn't ready for prime time.

I've been very happy with my Siemens s46. From what I've read the T68 has the worst RF performance. 1900Mhz is highly reflective, so it's not uncommon to see signal strength jump up and down. The signal to your phone might be reflecting off leaves on a tree outside that's wavering slightly in the wind.

You should have gone with Cingular... They actually have a switch out there now, and have improved that area quite a bit... I go down there (darn inlaws) and have great coverage....
