Probably Virgin Mobile unless there is a local option that I am unaware of.

Also T-Mobile To Go is a good choice. It is $0.25 a minute ($25 card), and you can use any GSM unlocked 1900 MHz phone. VM is slightly better, because the rate drops down to $0.10 (from $0.25) after ten minutes of use per day.

7-Eleven now offers a good prepaid package. .20/min, and minutes don't expire for a year. The phone is delivered charged, with a number assigned and ready to go. They use AT&T/TDMA network, which is excellent in SoCal.

Next choice is Simple Freedom which is only available from Wal-Mart and uses Verizon in SoCal, at .25/min. Some prepaids offer free Night & Weekend packages. The "cheapest rate" comes when you buy a big refill like $100 for AT&T Free2Go that lasts for a year and works out to .15/min.

Dave Markson has an excellent prepaid comparison here.

Virgin Mobile (which uses the Sprint PCS Network) is proabely your best choice. The phone's are inexpensive, the rates are pretty good, and it's easy to understand.

If you're looking for second opinions, I would agree with 7-Eleven Speak Out and Virgin Mobile. I used to use Virgin Mobile and they were pretty good.

noooo don't go with AT&T TDMA I used to have them In southern Ca and they sucked bad the best signal i got was 2 out of 4 bars... Most of the time i had no service or barly 1 bar.. Go with Virgin Mobile or Verizon just lowred their rates to 25 cents to connect and 10 cents a minute.
