i have this West Regional Plan with verizon and currently use the nokia 3285. there's a qualcomm 860 that I can get for cheap and comes with data cable, will Verizon activate the 860 since it's not a tri mode? i'd like to use its internet stuff, but dont want to get it if verizon will not activate it because of my cellular plan. anyone know about this? |

I am not intending to by coy or rude, but I highly recommend you ask Verizon. Regardless of opinions and experiences you get here, the final will be what your local Verizon is willing to do with you.

You're in the West. I'm just outside NewYorkCity. The plans and policies may differ there. Verizon only sells tri-mode phones but they WILL activate a dual-mode on a local plan -- one that doesn't use 1900. They will also still activate it on SingleRate National -- which at the moment doesn't have any free promo time. They might also allow you to SWITCH phones on an existing plan. I just bought a NEW StarTac for $49 FROM VERIZON. So it's difficult for me to see why you would want to keep an older phone... |

The last time I asked, they would activate an old Qualcomm QCP-860 on an account on the Single Rate West plan. There are few, if any, PCS channels used for SRW, within the 12-state (or 11 if your plan pre-dates 8/1/01) area. And since you want to use it for data only, you proably won't miss having Sprint PCS has a backup roaming partner. However, recently Verizon stopped selling dual-mode phones. They may then have began requiring all phones being newly-activated to be 'tri-mode'. Otherwise, the only mention of requiring a 'tri-mode' phone is with America's Choice plans. -Bill Radio |
