I was looking at a brochure for Verizon yesterday and noticed that they have a clause on it that says "Domestic long distance is $.20 per minute from your home airtime rate and coverage area. Long distance charges may also apply to calls recieved. Does this mean that you get charged for long distance calls inside your home area if you get a call from someone outside your area? Or is this if you are roaming and get a call, you have to pay long distance. The rep I talked to when I called yesterday wasn't sure... |

I don't know about the roaming deal if someone calls you outside of your state.....again you should be fine, but I am not positive. Hope this helps. Hopefully someone with more expertise can help you.

I am on America's Choice. There are basically 2 plans. Local, you have to call in your local area. In my case I have to be in New England and can call anyone in New England. If I call outside that area, I get hit with all the charges. I am on nationwide. I can call from anywhere in the America Choice System; about 95% of the Country. I can call anywhere in the US Alaska or Hawaii.

Sorry, I began to ramble and forgot the most important part. You can receive a call from anywhere, no charge, as long as you are in your local area. If outside your area, make sure that you have a home equity loan that you can tap.

I was just corrected by my cell phone guru, that on the local plan a call from outside your local area, will incur additional charges, such as long distance and roaming.

#1. I am in my home area in Arizona, and get a call from someone in Minnesota, is there roaming and or long distance that I get charged for? #2. My home area is Arizona, but I am in Minnesota and get a call from AZ, is there roaming and or Long distance that get charged. #3. How about if I'm in Minnesota and get a call from someone else in Minnesota, are there roaming charges then? I just got very confused by this last post... | |

The rule is simple, If you have the local plan your charges depend on where the phones are. I am sorry that I gave you erroneous information, previously. If you have a local plan for AZ and your phone or the other party is not in AZ, you will get charged the roaming rate. The plan is good only if all of your calls made and received are from your small home area. Last edited by rich6880; 05-10-2004 at 11:29 PM. |

Unbelievable! I don't know why anyone would want this plan. I have so many people outside the area that I would have to have another mortgage to pay for a Verizon local plan :-)

First, let me apologize for confusing you at first. Now, let me tell you how I found out. Five years ago, I had the local plan. It was different, which is why I got confused. The plan was, that I had to call from my local area, One half of New England, to get unlimited calls. If my phone was in New England I could get and send as many calls as I wanted on nights and weekends, and 200 minutes peak time. Two years later, I got a New Contract, I said that I wanted the local plan. Well, the following month my bill was in excess of $300.00. I called CS. They said that the plan was changed. The prior rule, if your phone was in the local area, there would be no additional charges. The rule now, the call has to be local; both you and the other party have to be local. It is a good plan, cheaper, if you don't know anyone too far from AZ. My cell phone guru, is my girlfriend, who said, "Are you kidding" did you forget what happened 3 years ago". |

As far as receiving calls on a local plan, you will be assessed LD charges while receiving calls OUTSIDE your local area not while inside your local area for the most part. Thus the phrase: "LD charges may apply while receiving calls..." They have to put in that disclaimer. Even in your local area, it is possible to roam and incurr LD charges if you make a call while using another carriers service. (Such as if you are in the mountains and roam off of AT&T Analog) You will not get charged for roaming if the person calling you is roaming. You will get charged roaming fees only if you are roaming. I used to have a local plan for years due mostly to the fact that it afforded me additional anytime minutes locally. Since I travel more outside my local area I have found the America's Choice plan a better value. If you are not sure what your calling habits will be, go with the America' Choice calling plan. You can always change back later. |

I am using Verizon and not ATT. When I inadvertently had the local service. I was charged for every call from my house and to my house, if the other party was not in Southern New England. I do not know what the charge was called; long distance or roaming. But for about 1,000 minutes, mostly during my unlimited nights and weekends, my bill was in excess of $300. Bottom line, go with AChoice if you plan to make calls outside of your local area. |

Man, IMO that is a stupid plan unless you make and receive your calls in your home state...

I wonder if that varies based on which market you're in... I have friends on the local plan around here in TN that have never been charged LD for incoming calls from people outside the state of TN. I do know that free long distance is included on all plans $49.99 and higher here in TN. I know VZW is made up of so many different former companies, but I thought they would have consolidated all the billing and plans by now. |

The home calling area is usually bigger than one State. In my case, my local area was all of Southern New Englan.

Nonononononono.... If someone from Minnesota calls a VZW number on LDC Carolinas and the VZW phone is in Winston-Salem, NC, the caller will be billed long distance. The person receiving the call won't be billed long distance! That's like saying that when someone calls your landline long distance, both the caller and you will be charged long distance. That's just not the way billing works in the US.

This isn't that complicated. The reason Verizon put the mention of charges for incoming calls is to cover situations where you MIGHT get an incoming LD charge. The current Local plans do not incur incoming LD charges anywhere within your Local Calling Area. These incoming charges happen when YOU are roaming, off the VZW network, and only IF these charges are made by the roaming cellular company to deliver the call to you. They could occur in or out of you Local roaming area, but outside your LCA. (Here, our Local coverage is 5.1 states, but the LCA is 2 states.) This kind of charge is rare, which is why so many here don't really know how to explain it. And it's my guess that those who opt for the $5 LD option won't ever see any extra LD charges. Now my disclaimer, these potential charges depend on your plan. There are Local plans that do not have the pass-throughs, so YMMV. -Bill |

This will be my last response to this topic. Since, I mentioned a few days ago, that it was a while since I had my bad experience with local service (over $300 in charges), which was made good by Verizon, I may be a bit hazy on the facts. I guess, I really do not remember if I was hit with long distance or roaming or some other charge (like my alloted minutes and unlimited nights and weekends were not valid for the calls I made) but my bill was very high. Prior to getting my large bill, I never went over my regular monthly charge. Most of my calls then as now were either to or from Colo or N.M., while I was in my home territory CT. So take warning, unless the plans have changed, I really do not see how the local plan could be the one for you, if you are planning on making a lot of long distance calls. I am leaving now, and really hope that you make the right choice, whatever that may be. |
