Hey everyone! My wife and I are going to go camping at Twin Lakes in a few weeks. Does anyone know if ATT has coverage in that area? For those of you who don't know Twin Lakes is about 9 miles NW off of hwy 395 and approximately 100 miles north of the Mammoth area. Thanks for any help bassman |

No, it's Mammoth, California. Twin Lakes is actually north of Mammoth Mountain near the town of Bridgeport at an elevation of about 7000'. I highly doubt that there will be coverage of any kind there. bassman |

Bassman, That area is served by Cellular One West who claims coverage all the way on rt. 395 from Mammouth to the Nevada state line! I bet coverage gets iffy as you enter the National Forest just north of the lakes, but they say there's coverage. Here's a link to Cell One's coverage page: Cellular One West CA Coverage Cellular One is a roaming partner of AT&T and the service is entirely analog in that area. If you're down by the lake you might be out of range, but coverage sure seems possible. -Bill Radio |

| I have seen people running around with cell phones in Bridgeport and I think it was Verizon and/or Cell One... but I am not sure. Anyhow, I have real doubts that any company extended their coverage really upto twin lakes, esp. as it is pretty far off the 395 between all that mountains :-) It's a very beautyfull area and you should rather enjoy the nature instead of yapping on you phone :-) C. |

Cell One West does have good coverage around most of the region. They're also now a Sprint roaming partner (PRL 10015) and the last time I was in Mammoth I found their coverage to be better than what Verizon's was when they were Sprint roaming partner there (PRL 10014 or lower).

I did a search on our intranet here at AT&T and no roaming partner came up, and there is no roaming carriers footprint shown on AT&T's maps. So, if you get coverage there and you are able to use your phone, that is great. But if you call AT&T up and ask why you don't get coverage there, the rep will tell you that there is no carrier in that area.

Jason, If I go to AT&T's web site and enter a local or regional plan for CA & NV, coverage shows up for that area. I have confidence that coverage is all along rt. 395, and it oughta be Cellular One, although I have seen a Verizon SID on my AT&T phone enough to realize both may be possible. The only discrepency is that the AT&T maps do not show continuous coverage back to LA, and the Cellular One maps do. Seeing as if you're roaming in one part of the (Cell 1) area, you should be able to roam in all parts of the same area, I would trust the Cell 1 map more. One other limitation is that the 3360 has no external antenna. Those rural sites were originally set up for higher-powered phones, and you're expecting quite a bit if you're not reasonably close to the cell site. BTW, Your Mom's a Hottie! -Bill Radio |

Thanks for all the responses everyone. Caliphonia- I'm not one of those dorks who goes to the woods and "yaps on his phone the whole time" but we have a three year old son and I definitely would like to have cell phone service in case of an emergency. You're right, the scenery up there is beautiful. The last time we went was 7 years ago - long before I had my first cell phone. Anyway, thanks for all the help. bassman |

| Bassman: I was just kidding :-) really :-)) If you are in that area I can highly recommend to go to this one Bakery on the 395 in Bridgeport (blue house next to the eating place with all that flags... on right hand side going north) - they have the most awesome stuff there - really good and all made inhouse... I like that entire region there, it's so beautifull --- Aiwapro: If you would know where the Twin Lakes are which Bassman asked about you would not even in your wildest dreams imagine that any digital carrier has coverage there. And trust me, as a Cingular GSM carrier I know coverage all over Cali pretty well... and would have mentioned it if there would be any signal in that area (closest GSM signal is about 100 miles in each direction) --- So long C. |

CaliphoniaBoy - If bears ever want cell phones perhaps the market will open up there LOL! We're going to stay at the Mono Village campground. I hope to catch a few trout as well! Maybe I'll ACCIDENTLY drop my Nokia 3360 into the lake. What a real shame that would be! Sorry, but I hate that phone. I can't wait till my first year is up and I can upgrade to a better (hopefully GSM) model. We'll try the bakery you mentioned. bassman |
