I am aware that SPCS phones are able to roam on AMPS 800 signals. My question is this: Since Sprint is 1900 CDMA, when the phone begins to "roam" will it go to the AMPS 800 first before going to 800 CDMA (even if the AMPS 800 signal is weaker than 800 CDMA)?? *The above being on a trimode phone of course. Also, If there is no AMPS 800 or CDMA 1900 signal will a trimode Sprint phone roam onto CDMA 800 in CA?? OR are there only certain regions where CDMA 800 can be used to roam onto in CA?? |

yes a Sprint tri-mode phone can roam on CDMA 800 digital in California where such networks are available. CDMA 800 currently exists in most highly populated areas of CA. Basically anywhere Verizon has digital service available is where you can potentially roam. Cellular One West will also be adding 800 CDMA in parts of CA soon if they haven't already. However your phone will usually prefer the stronger of the two signals when roaming so it might favor AMPS 800 in many areas. In other words the Sprint tri-mode phones are not specifically programmed to favor 800 CDMA over analog. In my limited roaming experiences so far with my tri-mode I have found it to be about a 50/50 split.
