Default Voicestream in California by July?

Now here is some news that you may not find anywhere else. (FLASH!: A "Kevin" exclusive)

Supposedly Voicestream in launching in California by June or July. (Would this correspond with Cingular's launch in New York?) My source? A Voicestream salesperson in Northern California.

I have updated my website, now listing Voicestream and my initial take on it for potential Californian subscribers.

Cingular is working on their sites right now here in Orange County. I noticed some activity this week and last where they were installing larger panels on their antennas.

Of course it corresponds with Cingular's launch in New York, that was part of the deal; that Voicestream would have rights to the So. California/Nevada area, and Cingular would have rights to the New York area. They will use each others networks, but bring more equipment to support their own. However, the deal out west says that Cingualr has dish out the first $450 million, before Voicestream spends a dime. I don't beleive that's the deal in New york.

June 19th is the soft launch. I thought I posted that here a while ago back when I first found out, but maybe not. Anyway, and I think the hard launch is July 1, but I'm not 100% on that date

Well, I've read so much bad about Voicestream, I am eager to see how well it is received here. The person I know (2nd-hand) is a former Nextel person who was hired by Voicestream. Since Cingular has trouble providing service to its own subscribers, I wonder how much outcry will come from Voicestream users that will be roaming on Cingular's network.

If Voicestream launches in Los Angeles with the already overcrowded Cingular subscriber-base down there and uninformed Cingular subscribers switch over to Voicestream only to find that they are using the same network, well, I can just imagine the outcrys of "I've been deceived" and other such rants. Time will tell.

Hey maybe I should frame this post and see if I become a prophet in my own time!

Kevin, do you read the VS usenet board? There are plenty of happy people. People with problems too, but I'd be interested to see some of the comments you have heard from, since it must be anecdotal as VS is not in Cali. I don't believe that VS has more problems than any other carrier, if you do not regard the lack of analog roaming as a problem. It's not a problem with the service since it's not part of the service. IT's still a valid criticism, but not like commenting on system busies or CSR reps.

As for capacity and Cingular and VS, VS is adding their own switches and other equipment. Cingular is also adding cell splitters and base station upgrades that will provide 2x-3x the current capacity. I think that's even in a PR on their website. VS is also contributing their spectrum, so there will be at least 40MHZ in all areas I believe. Cingular is spending $450 million in the 8 months (Oct-June) before the launch just in the GSM/PacBell areas.

Dang, I'll have to update my website again!

I really cannot comment on Voicestream. Obviously I have no experience nor do I know of anyone that does. Like you said, no one possibly could (in Calif) seeing as they have yet to even start marketing campaigns.

I am very interested in following the network growth of both Voicestream and Cingular. Though Cingular is a step-daughter and doesn't affect my company's bottom line, it still part of the bigger picture that affects the parent company--which affects all employees no matter which subsid they work for.

I wonder what kind of plan they will offer in the beginning to get customers to switch over to voicestream.

Personally I think that they need to add night minutes to their plans.

Another thing not offered by Cingular is a trial period. I read on the NorthEastern forum that Cingular does offer a 14-day trial out that way. But here in California, there is no trial period at all. Maybe that will change.

VS has spectrum in CA??? I thought they were just using Cingular's system and reselling it under their own label. Maybe I'm not understanding this correctly.

Yes they do have their own spectrum in CA which they bought from Pac Bell (Cingular) about a year ago but they will be using Cingular's system for the most part. They don't yet have any of their own cell sites so apparently they will try to beef up Cingulars antennas to accomodate both carriers. Whether or not this will be sucessful right away remains to be seen.

I saw that post too, Kevin unfortunely I don't know if its accurate or not as far as I know Cingular also doesn't offer a trial period here in East Tennessee either.

In addition to the specturm they have from the swap with Cingular, they also own 10 MHz additional in the SF and LA BTAs that they acquired from Omnipoint, who bought it from East/West communications before the VS/OMPT merger. Plus, VS bought some spectrum from Sprint partner Ubiquitel (sp?) but I'm not sure where in CA that was.....

My opinion about VS and Cali:

I used them a lot roaming on the east coast and generally spoken I found their network to be much better than the Cingular GSM over here in Cali. I hope that the joint-venture Cingular-VS will bring equal standards to the west coast

It worked everywhere I went and even indoors, in basements etc. (hey the indoors issue is not funny - it's harsh reality in the bay area) Thought that was really great compared to what I am used to from over here.

Also, my Battery life was so much better, because the phone did not have to search for network all the time.
