Of course the article made no mention of the rising count of dissatisfied customers who are constantly getting network-busy signals. It's part of the "lets put a positive spin on it" mentality.

Hello, operator. Please connect me to Scott Adams, I have another idea for his Dilbert strip.

Yeah but what they don't say is that it could take 3 or 4 years for them to make those $945 million in upgrades.

Hey Larry, it doesn't matter how long it takes them to make it up, as long as they are not losing customer for network capacity, and as well as expanding the area in the Nev and Cali. I'm sure if they can fix the problem they are facing in Cali and the rest of the western region, they will make it up.

I'm not sure of part of this cash if from the same bucket, but part of the terms of the VS/Cingular network agreement is that Cingular spends the first $450 million to upgrade the Cali. network before VS spends a dime out there. AFAIK, there was no requirement for VS to shell out advance cash in NYC before Cingular moves in.

"Some analysts and insiders have speculated that the latter deal may foreshadow larger cooperation between the two supercarriers -- including a possible merger."

Do you think there will be a merger in the next 5 years????????

Cingular is spending alot of money (950 million here, 700 million there). Are they making this money back, or are they just making money now, until the end of their customers contracts?

Aiwapro has a good point. I dont know what Cingulars retention rate is, but I was working as sales rep when GTE wireless converted over to Cingular in Western Washington. I was talking to 5-10 people a day complaining about the transition and wanting to switch services. I am sure that they have sunk a lot of money into retaining their current customers and bringing on new ones. Are they generating enough revenue with the churn that they are experiencing? Activating one customer is not cheap, and replacing ones that you have lost cost even more.
