Hi. I'm a student at UCLA who lives in the Bay Area. I'm thinking of getting a cell phone and am thinking about AT&T with a V60t phone. My question is, since AT&T is implementing GSM around the UCLA (Westwood) area, but is still TDMA up in my part of the Bay Area, what should I do? I need to have coverage in both places. Can I still use the phone in the Westwood area? I've heard that they are only overlaying GSM on top of TDMA so I might be able to use it. Also, if you guys know any carriers that are good around UCLA, I'd appreciate your thoughts. I've heard Verizon is the best, as they are the only ones with towers on campus. Thanks for your help.

Sprint is excellent South of campus, (Wilshire Blvd area) but not so much the north end up near Sunset. Cingular is a little better up north but their system has become overloaded lately. I heard that Cingular is the only carrier to have an antenna on campus. I don't think the others have any on campus. UCLA does not allow it, but for some reason made a deal with Pac Bell to let them put a small one up back around 1997.

Even though ATT is overlaying TDMA with GSM, a TDMA phone will still be able to be used with no problems. They will keep their networks backwards compatabile for many years. Although I'm not personally knowledgeable about your area, Verizon is a very good provider. I would probably not go Cingular. I've heard many people complain about Cingular in CA. |

AT&T should be a good provider in California, AT&T won a J.D. Power and Associates award there in 2001 for the Sacramento, Los Angeles, and San Francisco areas. Kevin is in california and seems to be quite happy with his service and I have a friend in Sacramento that has AT&T and loves his service also. According to Epinions.com for the San Francisco/San Jose/Oakland area Verizon and AT&T have the highest user ratings, in the Los Angeles area Nextel and AT&T have the highest ratings, and in the Sacramento area Nextel and AT&T have the highest ratings. I would also recommend against Cingular it appears to have bad user reviews on here and many people over in Cali say there network is over-sold over there. 2001 U.S. Wireless Industry Services Study: Awardees San Francisco/San Jose/Oakland Cellular Phone Service Sacramento Cellular Phone Service Los Angeles Cellular Phone Service |

Malial, Your point is the most direct answer that truebruin received. You gave him what he asked for. Truebruin: Malial has correctly replied to you. ATT is not so dumb as to alienate its current subscriber base by making it impossible to use TDMA. It will be co-supported for some time. Now as to your choice of phone--save your money and wait for some of the newer 2.5G stuff on the horizon. Kevin |

First, I want to thank you all for your replies. They're very much appreciated. Kevin, I'm wondering if you could specify which models you're talking about. I can get the V60t for fairly cheap ($40 plus free activation and a $50 rebate), so I'm not worried about the price as much as I used to be. Is it worth it to wait it out, and what features are there that would make it a better investment. Thanks a lot.

ATT shows this product (v60t) at $249. If you are getting it off ebay, be careful. Some shaddy characters have been selling Canadian Rogers/ATT phones to Americans that won't work here.

Make sure you run the serial number by ATT first to ensure it is not hot. I live in Tracy, work in Dublin (and SF on occasion).

You can't just buy all you want cuz the only way these places sell you the phone for that much is if you buy service with it. Because its the commission that they receive that makes them willing to sell the phone for that cheap. I like the phone right now, service around UCLA is somewhat spotty, but so is every single service around here. When I do get service, its pretty clear compared to other phones I've listened to.

Yes every carrier has their service problems around UCLA. If only UCLA would allow new antennas to be built on campus this wouldn't continue to be a problem.

I heard its actually not a UCLA issue, but an FCC issue. Supposedly theres some policy that there can only be so many towers in a square mile and since the Federal Building is really close, no more can be added since there are so many on and around the Federal Building.

I find that hard to believe. If that was the case, a new carrier trying to build a network in the Los Angeles area wouldn't be able to provide service there. That would give the other carriers an unfair advantage which would be unfair. And what are all the carriers going to do when the current capacity runs out around Westwood if they can't add new antennas? Sprint doesn't even have an antenna near the Federal building and I don't think Cingular does either. I believe Sprint's main site for Westwood is on the Roof of the big Ramada Inn and also one near Westwood Blvd. & Rochester. According to a Sprint official I've spoken with, the problem is with UCLA themselves not wanting to allow additional antennas on campus. All of the carriers seem to have pretty good coverage off campus around Westwood but on campus is a different story. It seems like there should still be plenty of room for sites on campus and north of campus if only UCLA would allow it.

Hey Truebruin, I'm also switching to AT&T and would like to get the v60. The only thing stopping me from getting the v60 is the price. The lowest I've seen it for was $149. I love San Francisco too for all the bargains. Nothing beats the best egg tarts outside of China for $0.69 and a killer haircut for $8...except for a $39.99 v60 of course. I bet this phone store is somewhere near Jackson Street, Clement, or in the Sunset. -Kitsune |

I just found the V60t for $99 (with service activation) after mail-in rebate at amazon.com. The thing is, the rebate expires on April 30th so the purchase would have to be made within the next 5 days. Might be helpful for those who can't get to S.F. to save an additional $60...if the mystery of the store location is ever solved. |

Gawd, three posts in a row....yes, I guess I've become a little obsessed with the subject of cell phones. ~* To the Anon user looking for the $39.99 deal on the V60 *~ I called around a few cell phone shops in the areas I suspected Truebruin might have got his kewl deal on the V60. After two calls I found a place that has that same deal. The place is called World Communications, 2024 Irving Street between 21st and 22nd Street. Supposedly the deal is only good until the end of this month. I was told, the deal is this: for new activation you can get a (brand new with 1 year warranty) V60 for $39.99 + tax, $35 activation fee with a one year contract, no activation fee with a two year. The plan you choose to get the deal has to be (I'm not sure about the exact amount) but I think it's 300 minutes or above. Since I yack a lot, I'm probably going for a 600 minute plan, so I wasn't too concerned with the limits to get the deal. Right now I'm paying $39.99 for 300 minutes on Cingular, so $10 for double the mintues is AWESOME! I'm so happy!!! I can't wait to get some cellular relief with AT&T. I thought this thread would pop up again. I'm not sure if the deal is still going on, but I got my phone from Infinitel Communications. They have some offices all over the Bay Area. I got mine from the office in Daly City. To get the most recent deals from the Bay Area, specifically SF, the Peninsula, Oakland, check out The Advertiser, one of those small free newspapers that you can get from supermarket stands. They come out once a week, on Thursday I think. When I bought my pager service as well as cell phone service for my parents and myself, I always found the best prices on the Advertiser. Hope this helps, and please let us know what prices are nowadays for the V60t. Thanks!

Friday afternoon I was so excited about the prospect of a $39.99 v60t that dropped what I was doing and immediately drove to S.F. When I got to World Communication the $39.99 phone ended up costing $79.97. They tack on $40.97 tax based on the un-activated retail price of the phone. That was kind of schtinky, but at $79.97 out the door, it was still a good deal. Probably not quite as good as Truebruin's. Another kind of funny thing they did was ask for an imprint of my credit card for $300. That way, if I cancel service with AT&T before my year is up, they will charge my card a $300 penalty. I guess they make their profit selling the service contract. So far I like my new phone. It's small, sexy, easy to use, and has lots of neat little features. Call quality is odd though. Sometimes it's crystal clear and other times there is a strange buzz that sounds like interference. I only get the buzzing sound when I'm calling from my office. Must be some kind of interference with my computer or cordless phone. AT&T has been awesome! I got great reception from S.F. (even driving through tunnels) all the way to Petaluma. No dropped calls, no network busy alerts...just pure digital bliss. Thanks for the great recommendation Kevin! |

Kitsune- I've heard of others complain about a slight buzzing or hummng with v60's. On some phones, the backlight on the inner LCD screen has been reported to cause a slight "whine"... |

Oh, great... I wonder if it's with every v60 phone or just lemon v60 phones??? Come to think of it, it is sort of a whining humm. People I call can hear it on their end too. It sounds a lot like being on an old cordless phone talking far away from it's base. Even though it's intermittent, it's pretty frustrating when calling from my office. If I get the same kind of whine other places, I might try to exchange the phone for a different v60 with the hope that it isn't all v60's. I wonder why it's the backlight on the LCD screen would cause that? I would expect better engineering from Motorola. As an experiment, when it happens again, I'll try disabling the backlight to see if it goes away. |
