Wtf is this all about i was watching the news while i was at the dentist this passed week and i was watching the tube. And they were asking a group of 3,000 people and this is how it looked now mind you these are what these people thought: Release 02-23-2002 - on which carrier provides the best nationwide coverage. Sprint PCS- 45% Verizon Wireless-32% AT&T Wireless-15% Cingular-8% I know the numbers maybe a little off but this is outrage, you figured atleast Verizon Wireless or ATT&T would be the top snatches on this but I guess not. If anyone has any futhur info on this report please correct me I am really instrested on what types of things these people were on, and who conducted this survey. (problaby Sprint PCS bah!) |

Well, Sprint's coverage in Northern coverage is more like 10 percent, and for me it's 0 percent, they don't even have service in Ukiah.

Spoken like a true Verizon fan, TNDan. The fact is, most people only visit the major metro areas. Most people don't care about the boondocks and they sure don't pay as close attention to Verizon's vs. Sprint's coverage map. All they know is that when they visit a place, they can access all their features from Sprint's digital network. I don't doubt this news report. The people interviewed were probably all fliers, so their impression is that Sprint covers the most area because all their freinds on AT&T are roaming.

There's really not much difference. AT&T for example only has a larger network if you tack on their roaming partners. Sprint's network is all their own using the same technology/frequency/features and does cover the areas where the great majority of people will be. I bet that Sprint's maps are a lot more accurate than Verizon's are.

First of all I am not a Verizon fan, my mom used them and had issues with there customer service and I know other people that have had problems with them too. Second of all are you kidding me? Sprint PCS has the worst reputation of any wireless provider on the market and even in major metro's people gripe about them. I've never used Sprint's Wireless service but nor would I, I have a friend that has Sprint PCS service and when I am talking to her, her phone drops call's and I can hear an echo the only reason why people choose Sprint PCS is because of there cool phone's and cheap calling plans. I have delt with Sprint though since they provide my landland service and personally that's one reason why I would never deal with Sprint, there customser service sucks you call and each time they give you a different answer and half of the time they are totally wrong.

I agree with you that many of their customer service people don't know as much as they should. I never have to go through them so it doesn't matter to me. Besides I don't think customer service has anything to do with the original topic of this thread.

True, Larry it is a little off topic but I still don't think Sprint's coverage is that good not from what I hear. Locally I've basically heard there coverage isn't too good and even if you talk to some people in Major cities there coverage doesn't seem to be that great and there maps do have hole's in them and area's that show future coverage. One thing that annoys me is if you go to Sprint PCS.com and plug in my zip code you get the following message : Partial coverage • The location you selected is only partially covered by the Sprint PCS Network. You may be unable to use your Sprint PCS PhoneTM, or certain features may be unavailable in this area. The nearest full-service area is listed below. Which I find strange cause there maps show the area well covered and they don't tell you this in the store. Yet any local zip code you plug in you get that message. |

Dan, Don't go by what you see on the web site. My zip code (92867)here in Orange County still comes up as partial coverage and we have had full coverage here for two years+ now. Basically once a zip code is listed as partial coverage it will never be changed on the web site. I don't know why they don't update it but many zip codes that come up as partial coverage do in fact have full coverage now. Also their current nationwide coverage map has been unchanged since summer of 2001 even though they have added new markets since then. Larry |

Hmm, I see that and that is odd. Sprint needs to fix that if those area's are full service area's now.

We are retired and RV about 6 to 8 months per year. We have about 400 people nationwide that belong to our club and by far the majority of our members subscribe to ATT's one rate national coverage. We have had great coverage all over the US with them. Rarely had an area of no service. Two or three belong to Sprint and a few more have Verizon. At a rally in AZ in February 2002, we had a tech talk on the various services and what technology is coming up. Already 4 or 5 of the 70 motor home owners at the rally are switching to Verizon to use the new technology to hookup their laptops. We were told Verison would be first (Jan 25) to use the new 3G service, in a few months Spring would and ATT at the end of the year. One person said they were hooking up in an instant with Verizon. Verizon was their IP, they had canceled earthlink as their provider. I think that the coverage is what determines which service to use. Nationwide no one beats ATT or Verizon. Sprint on a local level has been graded dexcellent in all the reports we were provided with.: We want 24 hour phone service but will want to connect our laptop also.

Sprint will actually be the first to offer 3G on a nationwide basis. Verizon is doing it piece by piece while Sprint will be turning it on all at the same time nationally. Dan, Sprint does need to fix those zip codes on the web site. The truth is is that some zips haven't been updated since 1999. Don't know what's up with that. |

: Thanks for the info on how 3G is coming about. We are anxious to get our laptop connected with our phone on the road. Regarding coverage, we have had ATT National for 5 years. We could always connect whether our phone said ATT, roaming, extended area with no additional charges unless we went over the minutes in our plan. According to what I read, Verizon said one must look at the phone to see where you are in the coverage area to be sure you won't be charged for roaming or long distance. One RV friend, that has Sprint, blocks his phone someway to keep from calling unless he is in a Sprint Digital area. We use analog or digital and if a message is left in an analog area. it will only be a few minutes until we pick it up. ATT has contracted so much coverage with other companies that we have good service almost everywhere. We travel backroads mostly, also. We will be talking to other friends that have switched to Verizon National coverage to see what their reactions are. As this is new, I am sure many problems will have to be worked out. |

According to what has been said about all this 3G, Sprint PCS was suppose to launch about 6 months ago but of course there have been delays. And according to inside info, that the first place it will be launched is in NYC but to that to say least with alot more rumors to boot. The point here is that for some reason people were given some perk for taking this survey. I still have yet to find out which on consumer reporting agency took this and how bias the questions were. Don't get me wrong Sprint PCS is a good service but I told them time, and time again. I will not use my Sprint PCS to travel with because if I go within 60 miles out of my home area. I am put in Analog roam, and i have to pay $10 extra for 50 mins of roaming bundle, were with Verizon Wireless SingleRate West is all good.. So thats why I hate the comprasion because I actually have both services. And there both cheap with the family rates we get so theres my whole beef. and of course it will vary between other markets. So bah! |

I've never heard that Sprint was supposed to launch 3G about 6 months ago. I don't see how that would have been possible simply because there were no 3G phones even available. I suspect that was just a rumor. All the reports I have read point to 3G being launched all at the same time in every market. NYC won't be first.

I know Sprint will be the first company to offer so-called 3G technology nation wide, but what CDMA service providers are calling 3G, TDMA service providers are already calling that same technology 2.5G or GPRS. Do not get me wrong I like CDMA, I even work for Verizon Wireless and before that Nokia. All Verizon has done is added pocket switch data to the network. Yes, Sprint will be the first company to offer 3G nation wide because like the commercial says they were "built from the ground up". But with Verizon, being made up of different carriers based off of different platforms: Motorola, Lucent , and even Nortel it is harder for them to integrate their systems. Verizon will be doing a major over-haul of their network in order to offer the 3G service nationwide. They have already started the system upgrade in Arizona. I don't think 2.5G is nearly as good as 3G. Just a way for AT&T and others to come out with something a little better because 3G for them is still a ways to come. It will also cost Verizon and all the other national carriers a lot more money to upgrade to 3G than it will Sprint. This is where Sprint will have a big advantage.

Sprint PCS just got in my area and to me I dont see how they are goinjg to win over verizon which is another carrier which isnt in my area maybe for a few more years, thay are 45 miles away from me, and me froim getting there service, so many carries and so many options to choose from where to go, i think living in Europe is the best way to do it. I have CeullarOne and they suck in Central Wiscosnin for coverage and Sprint PCS is about the same. |
