Once again it appears that Sprint will lead the industry in the 4th quarter of 2001 with 1,114,000 direct new customer additions. Their affiliates added another 381,000 bringing the total to about 1.5 million. Verizon was well behind adding about 715,000. Anyone know about Cingular, Nextel, or AT&T?

*Very* good question. I just sent an email to a rep I know inside ATT asking if the "bean counters" have finished counting yet.

By the way, the figure you cite for Verizon is their "net" gain (as posted on their website). The figure you posted for Sprint, was it net or gross? (Net = after cancellations and disconnects.)

Default ATT report available at EOM

At the end of this month, ATT will be making an official release regarding their numbers.

Kevin,

Good point,in regards, to the Sprint numbers. While all providers place a very high emphasis on new aquisitions, the number of customers who churn out tells the tale. If and when you come across these churn #'s for the industry please pass them along.

Since I just began with Verizon, I have been trying to find out as much about them as possible. Current churn I believe is 2.5 percent including pre-paid. Without prepaid, I believe the churn is 2.1 percent. Pre-paid is always high because much like email accounts, pre-paid customers are automatically deactivated after a certain period of inactivity

I know Sprint PCS's churn rate is a little higher at 3 percent.

Kevin,

It was Sprint's "net" gain so that makes it even more impressive I think. If you want I can send you the press release for it.

Hi Larry,

I actually read it on a public news site yesterday. Yes, that is impressive.

Sorry I was unavailable all day--family medical emergency.

VoiceStream came in today with 668K net adds, well above expectations that ranged from 400-550K. Now a total of 7 million subs, above their own internal estimate of 6.8 or 6.9. VS has passed Alltel for 6th place nationwide.

Sprint and Verizon were both below expectations, which were 1.2M and 1M respectively.

AT&T, Cingular, and Nextel have not yet reported that I've seen......Nextel said they expect to add about a total of 2M in 2001, which would mean about 500K for Q4. Being a business carrier primarily, they don't get a big Christmas bump.

Matt,

How do you figure 1 million for Verizon? I read it was more like 715K. And Sprint has affiliates that added an additional 381K so their total is more like 1.5M for the quarter.

Larry,

You are correct on the 715K for Verizon. That was the actual. 1M was the analysts' estimates (for shareholders and investors - just a forecast)

Sprint's number is accurate, as far as the core company.

link

<< The discussion of PCS Group expected results exclude any one-time items. Direct net customer additions in the fourth quarter were 1,114,000, bringing year-end direct customers to 13,555,000. For the full year, PCS Group added more than 4 million direct customers, setting another benchmark for the wireless industry. >>

Affiliate carriers, like Alamosa PCS, US Unwired, etc. etc. are discussed separately since they are separate companies. Similar to AT&T and SunCom here in the East, for example.

Companies are traditionally ranked in order of their core customers, since those affilate companies would be ranked separately. Of course, in press releases, companies sometimes include both numbers.

Sprint has less customers than Verizon but they seem to be growing faster than Verizon. Sprint added 1.1 million in Q4 but Verizon only added .7 million. It is interesting, though, that New York state legislators were able to get Sprint to change the wording of their adds to more clearly represent their coverage area. They say nationwide network, when in fact, the digital PCS 1900mhz signal covers only major metro areas. I have a feeling that there are more angry Sprint customers because they are selling fast but the consumer really does not know what they are getting until they receive the bill. -Jackstar

Cingular out this morning, and they are really bad. 325K adds - below one estimate of at least 700K

Nextel Partners Exceeds Expectations With Strong 2001 Results; Net Digital Subscriber Additions of 288,500 in 2001; Accelerated Build-out Covers 33 Million Pops

Monday January 28 12:00am
Business Wire

179% Service Revenue Growth in 2001
2001 Churn Rate of 1.6%

Nextel Partners, Inc., (Nasdaq:NXTP) today reported its financial results for the fourth quarter and year ended December 31, 2001.

Service revenues grew 179% to $ 363.6 million in 2001 as compared to $ 130.1 million in 2000, and were $ 116.0 million in the fourth quarter of 2001.

Partners ended the year with 515,900 digital subscribers, an increase of 127% or 288,500 from the 227,400 subscribers at the end of 2000 and an increase of 81,700 from the 434,200 subscribers at September 30, 2001. The average monthly revenue per subscriber unit, or ARPU, remained among the highest in the wireless industry in the fourth quarter at $ 70 and averaged $ 71 for the year ended December 31, 2001. Taking into account roaming revenues, ARPU was $ 82 in the fourth quarter of 2001 and $ 85 for the full year. The monthly churn rate for both the year and quarter ended December 31, 2001 was 1.6%, which is believed to be the best in the wireless industry.

"2001 was yet another successful year for Partners in which we continued to exceed expectations on all fronts," said John Chapple, Partners' Chairman, CEO and President. "Over the past 12 months we completed the initial build-out of our network on budget and ahead of schedule -- with the deliberate exception of one market which is due to launch early next year. Not only did we increase our service area coverage to 33 million pops by the end of the year, we also more than doubled our subscriber base while consistently posting industry leading operating and financial results. The long list of Partners' impressive accomplishments over the past year is a credit to all of our partner-employees and bodes well for continued strong growth and operating performance in 2002."

Subscriber Numbers Bolster Nextel

February 6, 2002

Unlike several of its U.S. competitors, Nextel Communications Inc.'s new subscriber numbers for the fourth quarter surpassed previous predictions. During the last three months of 2001, Nextel added 501,000 new mobile subscribers -- ahead of earlier guidance of 460,000 to 490,000 newcomers. The figures bring Nextel's full year 2001 additions to 1.99 million, at the high end of earlier predictions.

'Strong demand for our differentiated service continues to drive greater market share for Nextel,' says Tim Donahue, Nextel president and CEO.

Several top U.S. carriers -- including Verizon Wireless and Cingular Wireless -- missed expectations for fourth-quarter subscriber additions. The news forced wireless stocks into a tailspin and produced a flurry of reports from analysts. However, Nextel affiliate Nextel Partners, AT&T Wireless, Leap Wireless International and a handful of others managed to beat expectations
