Hi all-- What is the straight scoop on the web-phone thing? Can I attach my laptop to my cell phone from anywhere, send & receive my e-mail and do work, etc? Sounds too good to be true. thanks-

The short answer to your question is: Yes!. You can do all that you suggest if you have the correct phone, the correct software, the correct connection cables, and you are in an area with the correct service.
I've got a Verizon StarTac7868. I do it all the time -- or more correctly, I can do it whenever I am in a Verizon digital data service area. For those times when I'm not, I also carry an analog cellular modem and cable. But I don't think I've had to use it for about a year now.....

Yes, but don't expect it to be as fast as what you get on dialup at home speeds will top out at a max of 14.4 but most likely 9.6. On that type of setup its pretty slow to surf the web but it should be ok for email and chat.
