Default Question for any Sprint users in Arizona

Yep, they're in a MAJOR Hiring mode, the UP got caught short on crews, and are in a crunch right now, they will have that fixed by this summer at the high rate they're graduating new engineers and conductors every month. The railroads plan to hire 25,000 people over the next 5 years, 60,000-80,000 over the next decade, due to booming traffic and retirements. I'm working to get on with the railroads as a Conductor myself right now, I plan to attend the Modoc Railroad Academy here in Nor Cal this September, they are a non-profit school designed by the railroads to get high quality people ready, who are ready to go to work right away, and don't need as much training the railroads normally have to do (13-15 weeks) with new recruits, making them extremely attractive! They have small classes, conductor classes run 8 weeks, about 8 per class, and have their own track, locos, cars, etc, so you get hands on, no sims, though there is some class time too. It's only about 2 hours from my home here, it's located west of Woodland near Rumsey.

Default Question for any Sprint users in Arizona

Does anyone know if Sprint has native (non-roaming) coverage in the town of Winslow (which is East of Flagstaff along I-40).

Do you plan to stand on a corner in Winslow, Arizona and be such a fine sight to see?

Default Question for any Sprint users in Arizona

Larry, I managed to find the zip code for that city and plugged in into the Sprint PCS website. According to Sprint's site they do not provide coverage for that zip code.

Default Question for any Sprint users in Arizona

I know Dan but you can't go by that. That zip code data is way outdated. There are a number of zip codes that still come back as no coverage but have had coverage for a while now. Rule No. 1 is never believe the Sprint web site is up to date with zip codes and coverage maps because they're not. There's a big stretch of Hwy in Kansas (for example) that still shows no coverage even though it's been up and running since last December.

Larry,

Which highway in Kansas are you referring too? I hope it is I-70 in Western KS.

Default Question for any Sprint users in Arizona

It's on Route 66, and is on BNSF Railway's Transcon double track speedway between LA and Chicago, AWESOME place to watch trains! Historic Route 66, tons of trains, doesn't get any better than that

Default Question for any Sprint users in Arizona

I used to live in Wichita. I been thru that area of "Route 66". Seen lots of trains in that area.

P.S. Gotta love when a post asking about Winslow,AZ turns into discussion about Kansas.

Default Question for any Sprint users in Arizona

Cool! Yep, that whole route is awesome to do train watching, and the BNSF is looking at triple tracking the line, traffic on US Railroads is booming, and is going to increase even more over the next decade.

Default Question for any Sprint users in Arizona

Is that why UP railroad is hiring so many people for train service lately? I have seen alot of people get on with UP just recently.

Larry, I was on I-40 about 2 weeks ago when i took my cross country trip to Minnesota. The person that I was driving with was a Sprint customer, and east of Flagstaff there is no sprint coverage. Sorry buddy :-(

Default Question for any Sprint users in Arizona

Another person I know said they have one tower in Winslow itself. It even shows up on Sprint's internal tower maps (not the ones we can see). Are you sure about that? Maybe it's not active yet.

By the way there is SPCS coverage East of Flagstaff on I-40 for around 15-20 miles before it disappears. I think there's a tower overlooking Flagstaff on a mountain that has a ton of range.

Default Question for any Sprint users in Arizona

Now that I think about it, we hit the I-40 at Holbrook, not Flag since we went up through Payson, that would be why he saw no Sprint coverage. Holbrook was the town I was thinking of that he was not able to get service in, not Winslow.

Default Question for any Sprint users in Arizona

Oh ok you had me worried there for a second. I suspect there is a new tower in Winslow (or at least coming soon) but whether or not it's active is another question. It shows up as active on the Sprint internal web site.
