Hi all, Your assistance would be appreciated. We just moved to the La Canada California area a year ago. We have been happy Sprint customers for the last five or six years. Unfortunately, we have NO service at our home. Thus we need to search for better service. Unfortunately, Sprint Vision has one benefit that I love - Going online with my laptop when I am working in the field. I use this feature at least once every few weeks if not more. And When I'm out of town the benefit grows threefold. I guess my question is twofold, 1) who offers the wireless "modem" capability for their phones either free, or reasonably priced, and 2) of them, who has the best coverage in La Canada? Thank you again for any help! Jim |

I beleive Verizon has service in your area. You might want to give them a try. To be honest with you, I don't know much about all this data stuff and wireless modem stuff. I believe T-Mobile has better Data plans than Verizon, but you might as well check out both of them. Coverage wise, Verizon has the edge over T-Mobile, Data wise, T-Mobile beats Verizon with the price I believe. Hope this helps. ~Andy |

Hi, Unfortunately, I can offer no advice on a provider for your area but be patient - someone will. As for going online with your laptop, I saw Leo Laporte on TechTV's Call for Help describe how to set up a wireless / Bluetooth connection. There are a few notes here but, regrettably, it's more of a "feature article" than a how-to. The notes say that Cat Schwartz, the co-host, is using Cingular, BTW. They recommend SmithMicro and the show notes say that it costs $50 for setup thru them. Good luck and welcome to WirelessAdvisor!

Your only other choices are AT&T, Cingular, T-Mobile, & Verizon. But I am not sure which carrier provides good service in your city though. AT&T I know nothing about. They site is so confusing, am not even sure if they have a unlimited data plan. Someone here may know more about AT&T's data services. T-Mobile has unlimited data for $30 as a stand alone plan or $20 as a add-on to any voice plan. Speeds average 30-40 kbps, but speeds should at least double by next year as they and Cingular will have EDGE. And you get 300 text messages with the plan too. Cingular right now is $75 for unlimited data (Wireless Internet Express-WIX). They also have MB plans, click here. Speeds are the the same as T-Mobile. Also you can use Wireless Internet (CSD) which uses up your plan minutes, but the speed is very slow at 9kbps. It normally costs $4 to add this feature on to your account. But you get CSD as a free back up to the WIX plans. There has been some convicing rumers on another forum that Cingular will be having T-Mobile type data plans starting next week. But if T-Mobile dosn't work in your city, Cingular won't either as they share the same network in CA/NV. Verizon is $80 for unlimited data (National Access), there are also MB plans & calling plans that use minutes with NA. Speeds average 40-60 kbps (max is 144 kbps). You can check out all of the data & data/voice plans here. You can also use CSD with Verizon too. Again the speed will be 9 kbps, and it dose use minutes. I hope this helps, and we will try to answer all other questions you may have.

Thanks all!!! With sprint I get connection speeds of 100+ kbs, so it sounds as though I am looking at slower connection speeds whichever way I go. From the posts, however, it appears that Verizon or Cingular are probably the way to go. I'll try and ask around (neighbors and friends) to see who has better service here. Does this sound right? As I get closer to a decision I'll post again with any additional questions. Again, thank you for your help! Jim |

Yes, my wife has a different phone (don't remember which one) and she has similarly poor reception at home. In any event, we have a large hospital which stands between us and the nearest antenna and we are effectively in the hospital's cellular shadow! A search in this forum for La Canada Flintridge will help explain why we don't believe our reception will get any better in the near future! Thus we now need to look for new service! Thanks for the assistance, Jim |
