Welcome to WA, Tony! If your daughter is only two months away from the end of her contract. I would call Cingular CS or go to a Cingular Corp. store (if there is one in your area). And see what they can do for you. They may be able to give you a discount on a new phone (like a new customer). But you will more then likely have to sign a new 1 or 2 year contact. If you do not want to do that, then you may be able to give her your AT&T phone. But you will nedd to know if the phone works on AT&T's GSM or TDMA network. If the phone uses the GSM network you can make it work on Cingular. You will then need to get that AT&T GSM phone unlocked. There are many ways to get the phone unlocked. So make sure the phone is a GSM phone, then come back and we will direct you in the best way to get it unlocked. But if it is a TDMA phone you are SOL. don tony, yes, the frequencies are compatible between cingular and ATT; however, you will have a big problem. every GSM phone bought from a service provider (ATT, cingular, t-mobile, etc) is locked. that means that the gsm phone will only work with that provider you bought it from. put your daughter's cingular SIM card in your ATT phone and see what happens: your phone will not accept the SIM. what you have to do is unlock your ATT phone somehow. if you call the company they will most likely not give you the unlocking codes. you will then need to get some software and a data cable, hook up the phone to the computer, run the software, and your phone will be unlocked. also, there are sites that have a code generators. the locking codes the provider puts on the phone are calculated from the serial number of the phone. this code geerators find the bestpossible combinations to unlock your phone. if you have a nokia phone, try www.nokiafree.org. otherwise, run a search in google. good luck!

I would check eBay out for unlocking services for Motorola phone, last time I checked there were plenty of people who could do it.

coalminer, i dont think the fact that your phone is refurbished has to do with the codes not working. remember, the unlocking codes are tightly guarded by the service provider, they will of course try to make them as undecipherable as they can. these code generators only give you the best possible combinations they can come up with. sometimes they will work, sometimes they wont. the best thing is to try a different site with a different generator if the first one doesnt work. calbee, i dont know any site with a motorola code generator... i would just keep on lookig for one on google or etc, or go to a motorola wireless forum or message board and ask. sorry i cant tell you more!!

I must have done something wrong the first time, I went back again and it worked the second time, put my friends Cingular sim in it and worked like a charm. The one thing is that the automatic/manual network menu is not there with the Cingular sim inserted, and it does not show what network its on, just Cingular or Cingular extend. With the AT&T sim in there, I can find all of the networks in the area. One other odd thing, I was in the Cincinatti area the other day with it, and it seems that the phone prefers to roam to Cingular instead of Cincinatti Bell wireless, which is supposed to be part of the AT&T network, how strange is that?????? |
