What would you do?

Your an 18 y/o student. You live in a the California valley and are finishing your senior year and than you are going to leave to go to college in the San Francisco area. You are a really tech savey person and always love having the coolest and nicest phones. You currently have Verizon but can weazel your way out of the contract. When you move up to San Francisco your family might still have Nextel. What do you do? Stay with Verizon and have good service but crappy phones? Go to T-Mobile and get more minutes awesome phones but less coverage? Or do you switch to Nextel, so you can Two-Way your family?

You're just gonna have to figure out what works best for you. Try the trial periods on different companies and see how you like them. Everyone has their own benefits.

MattJo...I'm going thru the same debate...just different cellular companies/providers and situations. I've been with Verizon for over 4 years now and have excellent service, but "just an OK phone" (Samsung A310). I've been looking into Cingular for awhile...like the Samsung S307 (it's so small!), or the Nokia 6200 (nice looking), or Siemens S56 (also small, cool looking)...but waiting to see how coverage will be once the Cingular/AT&T merger completes. Also like you was considering T-Mobile...like the Nokia 6610 or Samsung E or X105...but again as you said there is the issue of coverage. Not all phones work everywhere...perfectly, but despite it's poor phone selection, Verizon at the moment does have the best coverage in the Bay Area as far as I've experienced and compared to friend's who have service with other carrier's. In regards to Nextel, that I don't know...I've only heard if you get outside of the S.F. metro area, then coverage can be spotty. I would wait awhile. I know!, I want a new phone now too...but if you can't wait, either try phones as Kaosu suggested thru trial periods, or if you don't go w/T-Mobile or Nextel, maybe look at Cingular....just a suggestion!

Hey Kaosu! I just replied to MattJo (above)...but just was wondering, if I stayed with Verizon, was looking for a phone that had a tad more battery life than my Samsung A310. I like the phone OK and all...but seems like you've had quite a few...Share your opinion on the Nokia 5180i, the Kycera Slider and the LG-4400B. Also have you had a chance to play around with the LG-4500 or the Samsung A530? Sorry MattJo...I'm not trying to steer this away from your question and concern...it's just that Kaosu has obviously had several Verizon phones...and if I stay with them...just considering and checking out options! Thanks Kaosu, MattJo and All!!

Well, here's my opinion
My experience in the Bay Area has been that Verizon and Sprint are both very strong(Verizon getting better/stronger service in some areas). If you do really want realiable service, you might have to stick around with the not so cool CDMA phones, instead of GSM. I have a VX 6000 and I'm very happy with it. I also have 2 Nokia 3589i's and one CDM 8900(I like the VX 6000 more than the CDM 8900). Why don't you just go to the Bay Area, see how you like the service there(which you will like) and then make a decision...
Greetings,
Andy

Verizon is the best in the bay area. T-Mobile/Cingular is also good. For Coolness and tech savvy stay away from Nextel. T-Mobile has a bit cooler phones and more minutes, tends to be better for college students. If a lot of your calls are going to be to your family then maybe Nextel will work for you. Nextel has good coverage in the bay area also.

Sorry I'm not familiar with Nextel, but do they offer unlimited Nextel-Nextel minutes?? Is that why you advised him to go with Nextel?
