According to someone on Howards forum, Sprint has installed a new pine tree tower along Hwy 330 on the way up the mountains towards Running Springs/Lake Arrowhead/Big Bear. This is a very important site because it's the first one ever put up in this area (which is either dead or very weak for all carriers). I can't wait to check this one out. Glad it's a pine tree and not a palm tree... It will look better than all those dead trees up there. I don't go up there too much, but in the past I've only gotten a weak analog signal with my phone in that area. Cool. It would be nice to roam off of it if possible but we all know how that goes.

just a quick question about the antennas they put on the tower. I noticed that they put shielding on them. What does that do?

They only put those on some of them. I don't know exactly why some have it and others don't. Most Sprint panels are not sheilded.

Very cool Larry, I wonder if anyone plan's on collocating with Sprint on that site, it looks like it cost a small fortune to build that particular site.

The way it works in San Bernardino County is that any other carrier who wants to co-locate has to apply for the same conditional use permit as the carrier that built the tower. So in other words it would take any carrier about a year and a half to go though the zoning process to get the approvals for co-location. Not going to happen any time soon unless someone else already applied way back (which is not likely).

Cool, I was born in Running Springs(well actually Riverside), but I grew up in Running Springs and whenever im in California I like to head out that way. I heard though that fire has pretty much destroyed Running Springs.

Update. Someone on Howards reported that this tower is finally active after sitting for about 2 months. Just in time for the last part of the ski season.

So Larry, you don't know what exactly the sheilding does to the signal/antennas? | |

Not really. I'll ask someone next time I encounter a Sprint worker at one of the sites.

Thanks Larry, cause there are quite a few shielded Sprint panels I see around. It's quite funny, cause some sites have the shielding on two out of the three pairs of panels...I wonder why not on the third one. Verizon also uses A LOT of shielding on their cellsites I've noticed.
